  • THE FIRST PURGE (July 4) - Trivia

    An earlier poster for the film included a red cap, referencing the divisive MAGA hats that were a large part of the 2018 political race.

    As the title suggests, this is a sequel to the previous Purge films, showing how things got so terrible and murderous.

  • SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (July 6) - Trivia

    Most of the film's riot scenes were shot in downtown Oakland, California.

    This film marks the directorial debut for musician Boots Riley.

  • ANT-MAN AND THE WASP (July 6) - Trivia

    Ants everywhere! In the trailer's soundtrack, the higher pitch guitar chords that repeat throughout are riffs from a song called "Ants Invasion" by Adam and the Ants.

    This marks the whopping 20th film to be released by Marvel Studios as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hot on the heels of this year's Black Panther and The Avengers: Infinity War.

  • HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION (July 13) - Trivia

    Weird - just as Hotel Transylvania 2 and Jurassic World were released in the same year (2015), Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is releaing the same summer as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

    3rd Collaboration between Keegan-Michael Key and Andy Samberg, after Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) and Storks (2016).

  • SKYSCRAPER (July 13) - Trivia

    Skyscraper marks the second collaboration between Dwayne Johnson and Rawson Marshall Thurber.

    Thurber made it big with the uprorious Dodgeball after becoming known for his Terry Tate Super Bowl commercials.

  • EIGHTH GRADE (July 13) - Trivia

    Eigth Grade is another Summer Movie Guide film that premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

    Elsie Fisher admits that her starring role as Kayla, an awkward-shy person, is a bit ironic given that she's the exact opposite - incredibly social - in real life.

  • BLINDSPOTTING (July 20) - Trivia

    While the trailer for Blindspotting makes the film look very serious - and it is - writers/stars Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs view it as a buddy comedy, just one that doesn't ignore the world it lives in.

    While Blindspotting is set in Oakland, the phone number listed on the moving truck that plays a prominent role throughout the film has a 415 area code, which is limited to San Francisco and Marin County (Oakland's area code is 510).

  • MAMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN (July 20) - Trivia

    Cher, who is playing Sophie's grandmother in this movie, isn't new to on-screen ABBA, as she had a cameo in ABBA's last video in 2004 ("ABBA: Our Last Video Ever"). In the video, Cher was an audience member while ABBA, portrayed by puppets, performer "Waterloo."

    Sometimes the wait is worth it, with this sequel coming out exactly a decade after the original Mamma Mia! (2008).

  • THE EQUALIZER 2 (July 20) - Trivia

    After a long career of originals, Denzel Washington is appearing here in his first sequel.

    This is also the first time that Antoine Fuqua will be directing a sequel to one of his own movies!

  • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT (July 27) - Trivia

    Henry Cavill grew a mustache in order to play the villain and was expected to shave it off for Justice League reshoots. In a bit of what is now movie infamy, however, Paramount would not allow this, forcing Warner Bros to pay millions to have the 'stache digitally removed in post-production, making it the most expensive mustache in movie history and the possibly the most ridiculed upper lip in movie history.

    Tom Cruise trained for an entire year to perform one of the stunts in this film. He also broke his ankle performing another stunt, and that's actually the shot used in the film (it also appears in the trailer).

  • TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES (July 27) - Trivia

    While James Corden has appeared in a number of films, this will be the first one where he uses a different accent from his regular speaking British accent.

    This is the first time the Teen Titans will show up on the big screen, and this may wind up being the best DC Universe team-up movie after Suicide Squad and Justice League were less than fan favorites.

  • THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME (August 3) - Trivia

    Sam Heughan, the male lead, was also in A Princess For Christmas, where he played Roger Moore's son.

    Sam Heughan is known to many as the star of Starz tv's Outlander, a romantic fantasy series that features amazing hair.

  • DISNEY'S CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (August 3) - Trivia

    This will be the first Disney production since 1990 where Tigger is voiced by someone other than Jim Cummings.

    Winnie the Pooh first appeared in books in 1926, so he looks pretty good for a bear coming up on 100 - must be all that honey!

  • THE MEG (August 10) - Trivia

    While mega-giant sharks may be dangerous, water was the real danger during filming, as Ruby Rose almost drowned on the set.

    The "meg" of the title refers to a megalodon, an actual crazy-big shark/dinosaur/monster last seen in the waters some 25 million years ago.

  • CRAZY RICH ASIANS (August 17) - Trivia

    Crazy Rich Asians is the first Western-produced film with an exclusively Asian cast in more than 25 years, which is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds (that it took 25 years, that is).

    The film is based on a book by the same name, which is the first part of a trilogy by Kevin Kwan.

  • LIFE OF THE PARTY (May 11) - Trivia

    This is the 4th film that Melissa McCarthy has worked on with her husband Ben Falcone, after Bridesmaids, Tammy and The Boss).

    Grammy-winning recording artist Christina Aguilera made a cameo appearance and sang one of her songs in the movie.

  • DEADPOOL 2 (May 18) - Trivia

    In the trailer, Deadpool refers to Cable as "One Eyed Willie", referenching the fact actor Josh Brolin was in The Goonies (1985) which is about kids finding pirates treasure that belonged to the pirate One Eyed Willie.

    In the final trailer, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall again by saying, "Pump the hate breaks, Thanos," another reference to Brolin who, of course, we recently Thanos in Marvel's Avengers:Infinity War.

  • BOOK CLUB (May 18) - Trivia

    Book Club could've been written by Warren Beatty who previously dated co-stars Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen (as has Don Johnson's ex-wife, Melanie Griffith).

    This is a reunion of sorts for Andy Garcia and Diane Keaton, who played nephew and aunt in Francis Ford Coppola's classic The Godfather trilogy.

  • SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY (May 25) - Trivia

    Forty years in the making, this film is the first time a Star Wars movie has been directed by an Academy Award-winning director.

    Han Solo was originally going to appear during the Battle of Kashyyyk in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, where an orphaned ten-year-old Han Solo, who is being raised by Chewbacca, was going to help Obi-Wan locate General Grevious.

  • AMERICAN ANIMALS (June 1) - Trivia

    This is a mixed documentary-drama about the unbelievable true story of college students who stole a priceless book from Transylvania University, located in Lexington KY.

    While the film is set in Kentucky, it was shot in North Carolina.

  • UPGRADE (June 1) - Trivia

    Upgrade was originally called Stem, presumably an acknowledgment of the cybernetic implants that are put into the stem of one's brain in the film.

    Part of Upgrade is filmed on the Hume Freeway in Cragieburn, Melbourne Australia.

  • OCEAN'S 8 (June 8) - Trivia

    The eight women leading the heist here have won a combined 35 awards - 4 Oscars, 2 Emmys, 8 Grammys, 6 Golden Globes, 5 BAFTAs and 10 SAGs.

    Ocean's 8 is being released on the 11th anniversary of Ocean's Thirteen (2007).

  • HEREDITARY (June 8) - Trivia

    Hereditary premiered earlier this year as part of the horror-centric midnight section of The 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

    Whoops! A trailer for this graphic horror film was accidentally shown at a screening of the family-friendly Peter Rabbit earlier this year in Australia.

  • HOTEL ARTEMIS (June 8) - Trivia

    This is Jodie Foster's first acting role in half a decade, as she last appeared in 2013's Elysium.

    Hotel Artemis marks the directorial debut for Drew Pearce.

  • WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? (June 8) - Trivia

    Director Morgan Neville has been directing documentaries for over 20 years - his last one was 2015's Keith Richards: Under the Influence.

    Including specials, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood aired a whopping 912 episodes over 31 seasons.

  • INCREDIBLES 2 (June 15) - Trivia

    The fourteen year gap between The Incredibles and this sequel is the longest waiting time between a Disney/Pixar film and it's sequel, besting the 13 year gap between Finding Nemo and 2016's Finding Dory.

    This is the first time that Jenny Slate and her gifted voice are appearing in a Pixar flick.

  • TAG (June 15) - Trivia

    Jeremy Renner has been unscathed as Hawkeye in the Marvel movies but, here, he fractured his right elbow and left wrist while filming a stunt.

    Tag is based on the true story of a group of former high school classmates who, as teenagers in the 1980s, would entertain themselves by playing the schoolyard game during breaks at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane, Washington, and went on to have annual grown-up games to make them keep in touch with each other.

  • JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM (June 22) - Trivia

    The movie's first teaser trailer premiered with Star Wars: The Last Jedi so, you know, a few people saw it.

    They shot this Jurassic World sequel in Hawaii (of course) as well as in the United Kingdom, using the code name "Ancient Futures."

    This is the squel to Sicario, a Spanish word that translates to "hitman" in English. Here, "Soldado" is Spanish for "soldier."

    Isabela Moner had to cut her hair down to a short pixie hairstyle for this film. She filmed the cut for her YouTube channel, and donated her hair to charity.

  • UNCLE DREW (June 29) - Trivia

    Tiffany Haddish and LilRell Howery are reunited here after previously working together on "The Carmichael Show."

    There are a number of NBA stars who appear in the film.
