Synopsis
Some kids are overachievers, but few kids pull off as much at a young age as Ricky Wershe Jr. did. In Detroit during the 1980s, streetwise Ricky was recruited as an undercover FBI informant and eventually become a drug kingpin himself – all by the time he was 16. And when his handlers abandoned him, he wound up arrested and sentenced to life in prison as a juvenile. Sounds unbelievable, right? Then we should probably mention that White Boy Rick is based on a true story. Newcomer Richie Merritt landed the role of Ricky himself, and Matthew McConaughey plays Ricky’s father, Richard Wershe Sr. The film also stars Bruce Dern, Piper Laurie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Brian Tyree Henry, and Bel Powley.

I enjoyed that this didn't turn into another boring rise and fall gangster story peppered with swish pans and needle drops. Instead even amongst the not-particularly-fresh family drama it remains sort of squalid and dirty and front-to-back melancholy.

Best of all is Merritt, a remarkable find who makes an indelible impression in his very first onscreen role. Giving Rick just the right mix of bravado and awkwardness, he’s like an improbable gene splice of a young Matt Dillon with a young Seth Rogen. Don’t expect him to disappear for 30 years.
