Synopsis

If you thought Get Out was terrifying, steady yourself for an all-new tale of terror from writer/director Jordan Peele. Lupita Nyong’o stars as Adelaide Wilson, who returns to her beachside childhood home for a family vacation. Her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) all come along for what they hope will be an idyllic summer getaway. But Adelaide is haunted by memories of her past, and the trip does not go as planned.

After a beach day, fraught with tension, the Wilsons get visitors at their vacation home. Four red-robed figures stand in the driveway — they are demented, violent doppelgängers of each of the Wilson family members, who soon realize the most terrifying thing in the world may be themselves.

Us is the work of a gifted director who seems to be compensating for having less to say by overstating how he says it.

Peele directs Us with a masterful collection of horror-movie tricks — jump scares that actually pay off, a cat-and-mouse game in an isolated place filled with bright lights and deep pools of impenetrable shadow, a throat-closing Michael Abels score full of intense drumming and choral chanting that elevates the action to operatic levels of drama. But his greatest asset is the performances, which turn an already creepy premise into something endlessly inhuman and unnerving.

Us is a very, very strange film. But that’s OK because it wouldn’t be a Jordan Peele joint if there wasn’t a little risk involved. Peele has proven that he’s not a one-hit-wonder with this truly terrifying, poignant look at one American family that goes through hell at the hands of maniacal doppelgangers.
