Synopsis
Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) once had a life filled with promise. In high school, he was a basketball phenom with a full university scholarship, when suddenly, for reasons unknown, he walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Now years later, Jack is spiraling down, triggered by an unspeakable loss, and drowning in the alcoholism that cost him his marriage and any hope for a better life. When he is asked to coach the basketball team at his alma mater, which has fallen far since his glory days, he reluctantly accepts, surprising no one more than himself. As the boys start to come together as a team and win, Jack may have finally found a reason to confront the demons that have derailed him. But will it be enough to fill the void, heal the deep wounds of his past, and set him on the road to redemption?

The "sad middle-aged drunk" phase of Affleck's career is truly a joy to watch. No one does this better than him.
Patrick WillemsMar 4, 2020Modern Hollywood’s messiest comeback artist is finally ready to show his work on screen, and there isn’t a moment to waste. You can tell from the first minutes of “The Way Back” that construction worker Jack Cunningham is unlike any character Ben Affleck has ever played…

NavyVet07🔥🔥🔥Mar 25, 2020was hoping for a bit more detail in the writing here than simply serious, sadboi Bad News Bears but it mostly works and i really do respect that there's no grand gesture to affleck's performance. the impulse towards larger significance must be so tempting but he correctly…

Better on the second watch. We need more sports dramas like this one.
Frandi PeraltaMar 24, 2020For my taste this was too much basketball and not enough drinking. But when these movies are as sturdy as this one is, they can be quite the tonic.

The Way Back is not a basketball movie. Seriously, The Way Back is NOT a basketball movie. The film is a realistic look at a person trying to live day by day. Affleck’s portrayal is shockingly raw considering his personal life. If you are okay with a grounded movie with…

Muscularly directed by Gavin O’Connor, whose facility with emotional dramas with sports connections goes as far back as 2004’s Miracle, The Way Back is elevated and transformed by one of Ben Affleck’s strongest and most convincing performances.

Let it be known that The Way Back – in which Ben Affleck plays a drunk who once walked away from basketball glory and is offered a chance at redemption when his old coach has a heart attack – is possibly the most melancholy sports movie ever made.
