Synopsis

E. T. A. Hoffmann’s classic holiday tale “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” has been adapted countless times. Alexandre Dumas took a crack at it. Tchaikovsky scored a ballet based on it. And now Disney is adding its own magical reimagining to the list with The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules). A girl named Clara (Mackenzie Foy) follows a golden thread into a mysterious parallel world to find a very special key that will unlock a priceless gift from her late mother. In the unstable realms of that other land, Clara encounters a soldier named Philip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice, the Sugar Plum Fairy herself (Keira Knightley), and a tyrannical ruler named Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). The film also stars Morgan Freeman, Richard E. Grant, Eugenio Derbez, Miranda Hart, Matthew Macfadyen, and Jack Whitehall. And keep your eyes open for a special performance from dancer Misty Copeland as – what else? – “The Ballerina."

A weirdly hideous hodgepodge of images and ideas, as convoluted as its confusing title would suggest.

The Nutcracker’s onslaught of wholesomeness also lays waste to anything that might stand in its way, leaving it crushed under the boot heels of its tin soldiers.
