Synopsis

Paint by numbers action film only saved by Henson’s charm. Very few actions aren’t telegraphed and predictable, but the ending gunfu sequence is decent with great use of music and only noticed one really late squib. Danny is so predictable.

Love Taraji - not Mary. The story and characters lacked development. It has all the right ingredients but because the writing lacks depth, so do the performances.

Wherever it falls on the quality spectrum, the bigger, more concerning story here is that Proud Mary’s journey into the movie marketplace is a good example of how Hollywood still fundamentally doesn’t understand what to do with many movies starring black actors.

Henson is the right actress to play a contract killer grown weary, but as a thriller Proud Mary doesn’t quite do her justice. It’s a connect-the-dots underworld trifle, watchable and minimal...though Henson holds it together and, at moments, comes close to convincing you that you’re watching a better movie.
