Synopsis
J.J. Abrams has a history of keeping projects under wraps, and this World War II-set horror film (Bad Robot’s first R-rated film ever) is no exception. The film follows a band of American paratroopers who wind up behind enemy lines, only to discover that the Nazis are engaging in gruesome experiments…and toying with supernatural forces. Beyond that, we know the film has an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Jacob Anderson, Pilou Asbæk, Dominic Applewhite, Iain de Caestecker, John Magaro, and Bokeem Woodbine. It’s directed by Son of a Gun’s Julius Avery. And Abrams claims this one isn’t a fourth Cloverfield entry. We’ll just have to wait and see about that last part…

Sean BakerSep 22, 2018Takes a bit too long to get rolling but once it does it's very silly and very, very wet. There's real glee in the splatter. With so much genre cinema lately seeming like a long episode of "Black Mirror", it's nice to see one that's a bit more "Tales From the Crypt".

Stutter with the Fedora likedOverlordOverlord is a horror thriller set in WW2 featuring brain hungry zombies with a great young cast. It’s always interesting combining a sub-genre like zombies and adding a twist to it like setting it in the past and it again works well here.

Really loved the first half. Did a great job at building tension and really showing the horror of war. Second half was ok but really turned into more of an action movie which is fine but a little bit of a letdown for me.

It is significant that in this vision of revisionist revenge, the ones who prevail against the Nazis are those who would be marginalized and targeted by them — along with their allies. For all its bloody cacophony, Overlord doesn't lose sight of its heroes.

If you took “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” mashed it up with some gonzo grindhouse pics, doused it in shaken-up cans of original Four Loko and then lit it on fire, laughing while it burned, you might begin to approach the craziness that is Overlord.
