Movie Info & Cast

The cranky Christmas classic from Dr. Seuss is getting an update, courtesy of the producers behind the Despicable Me franchise. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the big green mean one himself, who lives in self-sufficient solitude up on Mt. Crumpet with his dog Max. From his cave, the Grinch conspires to silence the holiday celebrations of his neighbors down in Who-ville… by dressing up as Santa Claus and stealing their Christmas cheer. Of course, he doesn’t realize that one of those unsuspecting neighbors is a little girl named Cindy-Lou Who, and she’s hatching her own scheme: to personally meet Santa Claus. By, you know, trapping him. It's save to say these schemers are on a collision course. After all, nothing says "Christmas" quite like the intersection of naughty and nice, right?

Did You Know?

  • This movie was originally scheduled for a November 2017 release, but was moved to November 2018. This was presumably to avoid competition with Sony Animation's The Star (2017), another animated Christmas-related movie. Had this movie been released in 2017, it would've been released sixty years after the Dr. Seuss book on which this movie was based, first published in 1957.

  • When we first see Cindy-Lou's house, there is a long winding sidewalk that goes from her front door down into town (she sleds down it to mail her letter). In all other shots of her house, this sidewalk is missing and the road runs right by her front door.

The filmmakers believe they have better emotional beats at the end than what that hack Dr. Seuss came up with—and in the process make the Grinch pathetic and practically groveling.

What the production may have lost in a “nasty-wasty skunk” of an antagonist, it gains in an inspired voice cast (led by Benedict Cumberbatch) and a dazzlingly merry and bright visual palette.

The filmmakers preserve Seuss’s narrative beats but strain to replicate his whimsical spirit.
