Synopsis

Oh you know, just your average “girl makes friends with her car, which is secretly an alien robot in disguise” story – with a twist! Set in 1987, Bumblebee is battle-worn and hiding out in a junkyard, where’s he’s discovered by a teenage girl named Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld). Decepticons and shadowy government agents aren’t the only things plaguing the cutest Autobot, though. Because as Charlie finds out, Bumblebee does NOT care to be Rickrolled… Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight joins the Transformers franchise to helm this entry, which also stars John Cena, Kenneth Choi, and Pamela Adlon.

It’s hard enough to have a fully CG character as your co-star, and it’s even tougher when an actor is tasked with creating a deep emotional bond with something she can’t even see during production. Steinfeld is up to the challenge, making us believe in Bumblebee’s existence almost as much as the animators who worked on bringing him to life.

The Transformers franchise has made bloated, histrionic pandemonium such a thing that the modest Bumblebee, for all its derivativeness, feels like a breath of fresh air.

The script stays on safe, formulaic ground, but it’s effective — and somehow breathes new life into a franchise that had become a junk heap.
