Mothers and sons. A sobering exploration of those intricacies— the joy and the heartache—but made even more complex due to its setting 1990s Harlem. A lot to love from a filmmaking perspective but you’ll walk out in awe of the the powerhouse that is Teyana Taylor.
Joe AJan 26, 2023“Where is home for me now?” Earth-shattering. The four walls of a home both a protector and the strictest secret keeper. The angry yells and fearful whispers absorbed into the walls encircle you in their sturdy embrace. Until the pipes begin to leak, until the wallpaper…

teyana taylor bro. the fact that she's not a lock for best actress is embarrassing for any awards circuit out there
clemMar 14, 2023A Thousand and One is an achingly authentic look at one mother and son straining against the system to stay afloat - and stay together. Writer-director A.V. Rockwell infuses her story with soulful sincerity, and Teyana Taylor’s tender and tenacious lead turn is nothing…
zoë rose bryantMar 31, 2023I’m a little disappointed by A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One. Based on the Sundance award, the trailer and general buzz, I was expecting a powerhouse of a film and that isn’t what I got. While the acting is strong, and the relationships endearing, the film doesn’t hit as…

at its strongest when it's critiquing the systems that failed these characters
Marya E. GatesJan 28, 2023Incredibly well told and emotional. At first I was unsure of the direction as it was reminding me of Moonlight but the story goes in a much different direction. Definitely earned the award it got. Teyana Taylor is stellar here and so is Josiah Cross. The entire cast was…
PaulMar 27, 2023such a intricate, emotional, and personal story told with such sincerity and grace it’s hard not to fall in love. there are some flaws, but those just make it seem all the more individualistic and special. give teyana taylor every oscar

8/10 Teyana Taylor absolutely excels in this role, but the acting across the board was great. Had a lot of beautiful shots and although the story kind of drags in the middle it lifts right back up for an emotional ending. Good movie and an even better lead performance
A complicated story about a mother and a son and a system designed to let see people fail. Pacing was a bit too slow for me in the first half but for better towards the end. Worth a watch to see the start of a very successful career for Teyona Taylor.

This movie does a great job building a relationship with the characters and feeling for what they are going through.
The long journey of an angsty mother to raise a quiet Black boy while being poor and depressed in New York.

This is such a rollercoaster of emotions revolving around the bond of a mother and her child. The way the film transitions for time jumps, the color palette used, the subtle hints of aging for the characters, and the script are all phenomenal. This deserves way more attention.
Time cuts were frequent and jarring, and the mediocre performances made it hard for me to sympathize with the characters; None of the weighty moments hit their mark, and left me feeling surprisingly bored despite the emotional nature of what was happening on screen
Teyana Taylor’s acting was great. However, the story kind of went on with no aim in the middle but then sped up at the end, where it should have been developed more. Which makes it meh but acting wise it was good and conveyed the emotions of each situation well.

Great movie. A bit disappointing in the ending though. Maybe it will be a part two?
KQKrystle QuintanaTeyana Taylor did an amazing job but for 2 hours I wanted more.
PBPORTIA BRIGHTNot your typical love story but it is indeed about love after you dig into the surface. Smart film.
