Mothers and sons. A sobering exploration of those intricacies— the joy and the heartache—but made even more complex due to its setting 1990s Harlem. A lot to love from a filmmaking perspective but you’ll walk out in awe of the the powerhouse that is Teyana Taylor.

A Thousand and One is an achingly authentic look at one mother and son straining against the system to stay afloat - and stay together. Writer-director A.V. Rockwell infuses her story with soulful sincerity, and Teyana Taylor’s tender and tenacious lead turn is nothing…

I’m a little disappointed by A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One. Based on the Sundance award, the trailer and general buzz, I was expecting a powerhouse of a film and that isn’t what I got. While the acting is strong, and the relationships endearing, the film doesn’t hit as…

Incredibly well told and emotional. At first I was unsure of the direction as it was reminding me of Moonlight but the story goes in a much different direction. Definitely earned the award it got. Teyana Taylor is stellar here and so is Josiah Cross. The entire cast was…

Not your typical love story but it is indeed about love after you dig into the surface. Smart film.

Loved this and I’m a huge Teyana fan! I just wish they would have included extras or a snippet to where the main characters ended up.

A Thousand and One is rich and complex overall, the saga of someone battling to build a family and a stable home with no real experience of what that looks like.

As the film moves further and further from its inciting secret, watching Inez and her son age, it fades beneath their countless tone-shifting hardships—revealing a film stronger when its close-shot realism is echoed in the script.
