Synopsis

GKIDS and Fathom Events proudly present a two-night fan preview screening of the highly-anticipated new film Weathering With You, featuring an exclusive interview from director Makoto Shinkai, the creator behind the critically-acclaimed Your Name. The summer of his high school freshman year, Hodaka runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hodaka meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong-willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Absolutely beautiful story and well done on the animation. Everything was hand drawn frame by frame for two whole years, and you can certainly tell just by watching.

Contemporary outrage could’ve potentially counterpointed the film’s increasingly mawkish tendencies.

Adding it up, the film has the same charming characters and delightfully detailed pastel artwork of its predecessor, but in exchanging Your Name’s sci-fi component for a mythical-magical story, it loses a bit of quota.
