As a piece of film history and for its technical achievements, "Vampyr" is compulsory viewing. However, as an actual piece of narrative filmmaking, it left a lot to be desired. There are some nice atmospheric shots, and there's a plethora of Gothic imagery that engaged my…
Dreyer acts like the arrival of sound is only a detail. Some of the finest camera work and moody images around. True experimental cinema that happens to have some recognizable narrative beats, but seems concerned with inhabit a space and a feeling above all else.
There’ll never be anything as influential as Murnau’s Nosferatu and I’m the first to sing the praises of Herzog’s revisionist remake, but there’s no question it’s Vampyr that takes the cake as my all-time favourite vampire film. In 1932, Dreyer was moving the camera with…
i'm finding it really hard to rate this properly. i can appreciate it for what it is and it has some haunting visuals, but i just didn't find myself being as immersed in it as i probably should've been. i was extremely bored for most of it but i will say that there are…
This is one of those films that, due to some kind of modern injustice, lives forgotten in the shadows. A few talk about it when the subject is vampirism, and when they do, the tone is always one of curiosity, never reverence. Which is a mistake, especially for those who,…
"Preoccupied with superstitions of centuries past, he became a dreamer for whom the line between real and supernatural became blurred..." This is the most radical of Dreyer's works, and possibly the most formally radical film of any of the 'classical' directors. Not so…
#Dreyer-athon with Jack Spiritual fulfillment written in a book of macabre lore. Dreyer's Vampyr sees the director's return to spirituality after his religiously profound opus The Passion of Joan of Arc – but this time, wrapping the road to heaven in an even denser gauze…
An aesthetic movie that particularly impresses with its playfulness with light and shadow. With his unusual narrative style, Dreyer skillfully blurs the line between reality and fantasy.
Vampyre is slow atmospheric and haunting yet I felt every minute. I love a good atmospheric horror film yet I just wasn’t really feeling this one. I wanted to love this but this just didn’t have much of an impact on me. Still I can appreciate it from an artistic viewpoint. 6/10
I love me some good old horror, but I can't lie, this one in particular was difficult to sit through. There's still the atmosphere, and the 1930s just had that eerieness, and I give it tons of respect, even if it didn't work for me.
Regarded as a great and I was a little disappointed by it. Similar to the far superior Nosferatu in a lot of ways. Nice cinematography and decent performances. Good but not a favourite
Spent about 40 minutes waiting for Nosferatu to make a surprise appearance before I realized this was a totally different movie. Still really fun cinematography!!!
I’m Tom Bodett from Motel Courtempierre and we’ll leave the bite on for you.
Eerie, atmospheric piece that definitely warrants your time.
