Synopsis
Based on a remarkable true story, Unsung Hero follows David Smallbone as he moves his family from Down Under to the States, searching for a brighter future after his successful music company collapses. With nothing more than their seven children, suitcases, and their love of music, David (for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives. Helen’s faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. With their own dreams on hold, David and Helen begin to realize the musical prowess in their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in Inspirational Music history: five-time GRAMMY Award®-winning artists for KING + COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James.

Titans of the faith-based filmmaking industrial complex they helped to create, Kingdom Story Company founders Andrew and Jon Erwin built their brand on the Christian rock biopics “I Still Believe” and “I Can Only Imagine,” ultra-benign stories of faith, loss, and profit…
davidehrlichApr 28, 2024A SOLID FAITH BASED FILM. Similar to this past February's Ordinary Angels, not overly preachy. There's a little bit of praying, little bit of church going, but if it's trying to convert you to the Lord, it's not trying very hard. Never felt like propaganda, it's more…
Joel R.Apr 28, 2024Unsung Hero is a movie I hadn't heard of when I saw it pop up at the local theater. Analyzing the ticket patterns of showings, I deduced it might be a faith-based film. The screenings were unusually full for such a seemingly obscure film which suggests the religious…

I’ve never heard of these people, and I’ll probably never think of these people again. She said she was, and I quote “preggers”. Why would you write your mother saying that? Acting as your own father is pretty stupid. Imagine The Rock playing his own dad in Young Rock, that…
gregs1999Jun 11, 2024“Welcome to Nashville, Y’all” You couldn’t find a less holy person than me in the world, I’m a sinner through and through, but strike me down and call me Sally I really enjoyed this extremely preachy, saccharine sweet, shove Christianity down my throat inspirational tale…
B E R TApr 30, 2024Weighing in on the Joel vs. Joel debate on how to rate this faith-based film: If you're a fan of independent subtle music aspirational biopics of underseen or select-demographic acts and/or behind-the-scenes music professionals, such as most recently DREAMIN' WILD (2022)…

“Your family’s not in the way, they are the way” 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Fast and Furious found dead in a ditch. Vin Diesel, rolling around his bald head glinting in the sun, mouth desperate for water. Joel Smallbone has his foot over a canteen and boots it 50 miles leaving Vin to cope.…
Colin TwisselmannJun 10, 2024OK, can I ask a simple question, is your family what really makes you rich in life? “Unsung Hero” doesn’t really have the answer to that question, but it convincingly and in all accounts argues that making a hit movie about them wouldn’t hurt. Ok, I just threw that in to be…
WingnutApr 27, 2024An excellent film that I thoroughly enjoyed and really loved. It’s a heartwarming and emotional underdog story with great writing and characters and it’s really inspiring. I loved this film even though I’m a bit biased because I’m a Christian and a fan of for King &…

An incredible story of a family from Australia who lost everything and moved to Nashville. So inspiring how they trusted God to provide. Also a great reminder of how a mom can have such a profound impact on her kids by encouraging them to dream big and trust God in…

Despite missing some needed scenes to carry forward the lead’s emotional throughline, this is a good film that is sure to resonate with its core demographic.

Cinematographer Johnny Derango helps to ensure that the film’s more prosaic moments — of which there are many — are endowed with the same ambient vitality, as the active camerawork and careful framing invite audiences to look for truth in the kind of story that tends to just shove it in your face.

It’s a humble story, one with the capacity to inspire in its simple message of perseverance. But the film itself, as an artistic product, feels limited in its observational scope, because the filmmaker doesn’t have any distance from the material.
