almost choked on the gay subtext
kirsty🌙✨May 3, 2019When J.R.R. Tolkien’s estate issued a statement objecting to Dome Karukoski’s dour new biopic about the “Lord of the Rings” writer’s formative years, they had yet to actually see the film. Odds are they never will, as Christopher Tolkien has made clear his frustrations over…
davidehrlichMay 18, 2019My main takeaway is that they must’ve kidnapped the family of whoever color corrected this and told them “make this movie look like a goddamn pumpkin or we’ll kill your kids”

"it’s a story about journeys, the journeys we take to prove ourselves. it’s about adventures. it’s about potent magic, magic beyond anything anyone has ever felt before. about what it means to love, and to be loved. about courage. it’s about fellowship." lord of the…
˗ˏˋ suspirliam ˊˎ˗May 30, 2024“it shouldn't take 6 hours to tell a story about a magic ring" this is so 😭
júliaDec 17, 2024Beautiful yet shallow, emotional yet slightly disjointed. Karukoski hesitates to truly dive into Tolkien's depths, instead he crafts a surface-level beauty that feels more like a reflection than an exploration. But it's not a bad thing i guess but it felt a bit hollow. The…

Not nearly as bad as I expected, though still not as great as it should be. The direction and execution of the film itself are actually well-near-commendable; the casting (even for small roles) is superb and memorable, and the production design feels rich! It's just the…
Georgia ColeyMay 15, 2019I know this didn’t reinvent biopics or anything but guys!!! I’m a sucker for stories about friendships that are so strong they become your family!! It’s partly why I love lord of the rings so much. Thank you JRR Tolkien luv you bro ✊🏻
🌻 lindsay 🌻May 8, 2019I’ve been emotionally bamboozled. At first, I thought Tolkien was going to be a lacklustre slog devoid of any artistic merit - an Oscar-bait biopic that has been told many times before. I have never been more wrong. Sure, it's a fairly standard story with beats that…

This was decent. It struggles in focus at first but develops nicely and becomes quite meaningful. This is a wonderful showcase of Nicholas Hoult’s talent.
John Ronald Reul Tolkien’s life from adolescence through WWl which shaped his imagination for the stories of Middle Earth as we know it today. Great performances and well thought out story that shows the development of one of the most renowned fantasy writers ever.

Perfection. His life told as a fairy-tale, as though he had written it himself. Encapsulates dynamics in a group of boys, true depiction of love, fantasy iconography galore. Would wring tears off a shrivelled husk of a man. Impeccable wardrobe.
literally SO BEAUTIFUL i expected it to be a badly written biography but it was such a hommage to his life and stories so whimsical and emotional and story telling gives an even deeper appreciation for language and literature and his writing !!

(Minor Spoilers) Liked it a lot, almost got a love, but I think it ended on a weird note considering how many other wild things happened in Tolkien’s life other than the war.
Really cool to see this side of such great stories. It was also fun to see the TCBS in this movie because I heard it talked about in my tour when I went to Oxford

Every second a heartfelt, stunning, and meaningful story that gives hope to creative minds and romantic hearts alike! A must see for anyone who loves a great story with a lot of heart.
CECody EnosA serviceable, if unfocused, biopic. 2.5/5
KHKaris HagenI loved the movie. It was very well done, in a way that even those who know nothing about Tolkien will be able to enjoy the movie, but also packed full of "aha" moments for veteran fans. Based on the true story of Tolkien's life that led up to his writing the great legends…

Going into it as a huge Tolkien fan, I loved watching this movie. Seeing a bit of Tolkien’s biography played out was extremely enjoyable. I laughed, teared up, and was very engaged throughout.
SWSANDRA WHITEA great portrayal of both Tolkien's early life but also a glimpse into turn of the century life in England. The acting and directing was so good that you could feel emotions. Loved the costumes too. Be prepared for some hard to watch scenes with the reality of war and the…
ALAgustina LopezTheater was great as well.

TDTony DickersonOne clearly sees the path of the author from orphan to world renowed creator of mystical worlds.
ZAZack AufdemorteGood story but missing some of the more important parts to story creation
