Roddy Piper and Keith David fight in an alley for like 45 minutes
9VOLTSep 14, 2021Roddy Pipers character is a real one. Discovers a secret ruling class of aliens and he just instantly brings a shotgun into a bank and starts killing them
Mike GinnMar 4, 2014What strikes me most about Carpenter is his coolness, the calm deliberation with which he lets his plots unfurl. This premise, in the hands of any other filmmaker, would be a lightning quick action comedy, Men in Black or Big Trouble in Little China style. But instead it's…

Would have been fun if one of the magazines at the newsstand was normal even after he put the sunglasses on. Just like "OBEY" "CONSUME" "OBEY" "OBEY" and then "Golf Digest"
brendan o'hareJul 9, 2022no joke, 15% of this movie is a single fistfight between two guys in an alley… and it freakin rocks.

7/10 I was scarred from Vampires and expected the same boring storylines & drawn out scenes with no purpose. This completely changed my perspective, there’s so much meaning in this film and the execution is quite good especially for the 80s.
This was a okay movie especially for the time it was made! There is a plot twist that you just wont forget. Although the fight scenes will make you cringe its all in all okay. 6/10

“Mama don’t like tattletales.” I truly enjoyed this. Still holds up and looks great. Excellent nod to governmental overreach, consumerism, social issues, and more that’s not overly done. Great pacing, although that fight scene went on for too long. Good acting. Good score. Tons of great one…
This film was ahead of its time, & its exploration of power structures remains just as relevant today. Making it a timeless, powerful critique. A visionary film that perfectly captures the dangers of media manipulation & consumer culture. Carpenter sure has a way of making films.
This is better if you’ve listen to zizek talk about it first. If not, the fight scene is comically long to the point that it’s stupid. I wanted to really like this but nothing can make up for the fact they’ve got the same du duuuum dum bass line playing the entirety of the movie.

Really good. I like conspiracy movies like this. I just wish it was longer because when it really started to get good, there was, like, 10 minutes left of the movie. The ending was very honourable though. One complaint: the fight between John and Frank dragged on a bit too long.
Another John Carpenter film with super interesting concept and awesome soundtrack, but that I don't really see myself rewatching. The central concept and conspiracy poses several fascinating possible allegories and messages. The action wasn't anything special or stand-out.

The terrors put forth by the film are at once specific to the era of its production and timeless in their direct connection to the American experience.
Has its share of underthought or overwrought moments. The tone keeps shifting radically. It has some silly lines, plot lapses and goofball action scenes. But you can forgive the movie everything because of the sheer nasty pizazz of its central concept. [4 Nov 1988]
