Moviegoers are saying
Reviewers keep coming back to Ethan Hawke, who is called "terrific" and "first rate" in a ragtag Oregon-set gold-transport thriller that is really about greed as much as gunfights. The ensemble of prisoners, hired goons, and a stowaway gets praise, and the thunderstorm sequence is singled out as riveting, but shaky handheld action, confusing editing, and an off-key horror score keep the movie from landing as hard as its premise promises.

This one was built differently in terms of the course of events and also some camera angle in some shots and this is what I liked about it, and of course Russell Crowe gave a very strong performance Solid 4.5 ⭐
Malk 🎬Sep 9, 2026Weirdly this reminded me more of TRIPLE FRONTIER than anything else. Was grateful that this wasn't really a SIERRA MADRE riff and instead was more a story of the coolest head prevailing. Hawke is terrific.
matt lynchSep 20, 2026The core story here is pretty good. Hawke leads a ragtag team of fellow prisoners, hired goons, and a stowaway on a backtracking expedition across the Oregon wilderness transporting a small fortune — a very heavy small fortune — in gold. There’s real suspense throughout…

Secret Movie Series 09/07/2026 i enjoyed the score and the foggy, forest scenery. i also loved the lightning scene and how the only time we could see what was going on was when there was a flash of lightning, it definitely added an atmosphere that worked really well.

Very good. Simple story with good action and suspense. Some scenes are very long and drawn out where its like looking at a still picture for 5 minutes and the grunge sounds are a little much.
Wagner Freitas likedThe WeightA film that does a full circle no matter how you try to look at it, and yes perspective matters in this one. Ethan Hawke, Russel Crowe & Julia Jones gave the energy it needed when it needed!
WWE President of Personality likedThe WeightIt is a fun movie, with subtle action and enjoyable suspense. I would have liked to have more context into Ethan’s character. Cinematography was very nice too.

When The Weight leans into its nasty, mean and grim moments, it gets at something that seems closer to truth than the saccharine sweet resolution we hope, or fear, is coming. It seems like McKinley wants to deliver a crushing blow, but then feints at the last minute, opting for a more optimistic kind of fantasy.

It’s a rousing hero’s journey, though, amounting to no more or no less than Hawke’s mesmerizing Murphy putting himself through the wringer to find his way home. That’s as fine a rationale to make a movie as any.
