The Old Way is a western revenge tale that while it’s mostly cliché, it makes for a fairly entertaining watch.  Nic Cage outshines pretty much here as the infamous Colton Briggs who has hung up holsters and settled down to be a family man. But when a band of outlaws comes…

Happy birthday to my favorite actor and one of my favorite people alive, Nicolas Cage!!! 🥳🎉 I love this man to death, and I decided to celebrate by seeing his new movie in a theater. Was tons of fun.  For the movie itself, it was good. Nothin special, but it was…

Nicolas Cage scholars might quibble with the promotional claim that Brett Donowho’s “The Old Way” is the actor’s “first traditional Western” — a choice of words that’s careful not to step on the spurs of neo-genre fare like “Butcher’s Crossing” and “Prisoners of the…

STARRING: NIC FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKIIIIIIING!!!!! CAGE (THE COPPOLA SAGA) Nicolas Cage’s True Grit-ish is a shrug of a movie anchored by a solid performance from Cage as this beaten-up, somewhat stern man who seeks to seek revenge after a band of outlaws pulls him back into the…

“I like watching you do most things” -Colton Briggs- The Old Way, and please excuse this pun, is “The Old Way” of storytelling. The Old Way is straightforward and predictable, riddled with tired cliches and cheesy dialogue. There are no surprises and it’s brimming with…

First 2023 release for me and it’s ridiculous mostly in the worst ways. The tone is incoherent and inconsistent in this one. I feel like it was trying to be comedic in a lot of ways (including a silly-looking Nick Cage shooting outlaws that let out wilhelm screams not five…

The revenge narrative may be worn rope-thin by archives of forgotten shoot-’em-ups, but Mr. Cage and director Donowho pull enough sub-themes out of old Bud Boetticher movies to inject the kind of suspense and true grit that still works.

This is a revenge Western we’ve seen dozens of times before, and the villains aren’t nearly as intimidating and pitch-black evil as they need to be. The end result is a passably entertaining shoot-’em-up with very few surprises.
