After many viewings of the Adam Sandler version and a less-than-pleasant experience with Mean Machine, I figured it was about time I checked out the original. One of several collaborations between Burt Reynolds and Albert S. Ruddy, most known for his work on The…
Rafael "Mister Movie" JovineAug 1, 2023After getting sent to prison, disgraced ex-NFL player Paul Crewe (Burt Reynolds) is forced into assembling a team of cons to compete against the guards, in this classic prison sports comedy from Robert Aldrich. It’s all filled with a really distinctive early 70s grit: in…
Josh GillamFeb 10, 2016Enough uniquely 1970s toxic testosterone to poison the island of Themyscira, but as is also (sports metaphor) par for the course in the 70s it never seems comfortable or complacent with the across-the-board awful state of things. Muscular, anti-authoritarian, hilarious,…

White Man's Burten or Pro and Cons This could have been about nothing but plucky underdogs doing good at sports, but in the spirit of the times, it very clearly seems to be inviting reading the clash between the prison guards and the prisoners as something more;…
lairdAug 5, 2023"The Longest Yard" is a 1974 sports comedy directed by Robert Aldrich. The directorial career of Aldrich was always an interesting one, easily an exemplified example of existing within the inner workings of the studio system, but also being an early maverick director that…
Blake Bergman "Various Spaghetti"May 27, 2023stands to reason that Robert Aldrich would turn football into a 121 minute war movie, The Dirty Dozen inside the walls of a prison, assembled of men with even less to lose and even more of a penchant for violence — climactic game (which is a major portion of its runtime)…

Go Chiefs.
Keegan WJun 25, 2022Watched this because of "The Offer" on Paramount+. Producer Albert S. Ruddy turned down making "The Godfather Part II" to tell this story. That takes some serious balls!
Ludovic BagmanFeb 27, 2024My greatest takeaway from watching the original Longest Yard, is that Richard Kiel should have been cast in more movies. "The most important thing to remember is: to protect your quarterback - ME!" - Paul Crewe

any adam sandler movie is just great tbh I like how they are good comedys and quite wholesome group of people in the end
a strong burt reynolds film that partially serves as a character study for the most unhinged and uncaring ex-sports star of all time. well written, funny enough, and packing plenty of wholesome themes for family viewing

Unapologetically funny and crass. Reynolds is cool. A+ editing and timing on the punchlines.
