Synopsis

The Long Game, inspired by the book “Mustang Miracle” follows the true story of five young Mexican American caddies in 1955 who created their own golf course in the middle of the South Texas brush country. Despite outdated and inferior equipment and no professional instruction to begin with, they would go on to compete against wealthy, all-white teams and win the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship.

    Oh my god. This was such a wonderful movie. Definitely gives me more perspective on the world and Americas history of oppression. If you haven't seen this yet I highly recommend watching it

    Very few movies are original to me, and that's not a knock on them. Originality of plot isn't so important to me as the style and feeling of a film. The likeability of the cast. Do I root for these people? In the case of The Long Game, I did. That's enough for me to enjoy…

    So so good. Went in with low expectations but loved it. Story had so many layers and a perfect cast (disclaimer: I love golf but this is about so much more than that!)

    Little corny but well done. Characters lacked depth, especially any opponents to the team but it still got its point across. Good movie overall, I enjoyed the relationships. Hated the outcome of the coaches and wives game. Weak. 6.5/10

    Movie follows a classic plot line but does it well and succeeds in leaving the viewer inspired. Well worth it as a popcorn watch.

    Being of Puerto Rican descent, my dad told me of the discrimination he faced growing up on the streets of New York City. So this movie hit home for me. Also as a fan of golf since I was young I wondered how Lee Trevino felt growing up and developing his game in that Era.…

    Inspirational true story of Latino golfers in the 1950s. Quite an amazing tale of racism and success despite the obstacles. The film has some minor glitches, but the story is terrific. Worth watching for sure.

For this team and their coach, the long game is about whatever it takes to play and get on track to a championship, even if that means smiling at insults and swallowing their pride when the competition cheats. Ultimately, though, it's not about golf but about dedication, resilience, and the joy of finding you can do better than your dreams.

The Long Game doesn’t push itself far enough, but ultimately, it successfully and truthfully tells the story it set out to tell and has fun along the way.

The Long Game is determined to ape the tropes of a feel-good sports drama, but only as a means to an end, and its struggle to balance the demands of the genre with the deeper concerns underpinning this story ultimately stops either side of that equation from going the distance.
