Moviegoers are saying
Reviewers are more amused than moved by this Hunger Games adaptation. One viewer jokes about Peeta breaking out his paint set to cosplay as a rock while everyone else is busy killing each other, and another sees Katniss as the older sister who ruins a younger sister's shot at television. Several think the books hit harder than the film, but the fandom's tags (HEARTPOUNDING, BLOCKBUSTER, GREATCAST) show that many people still love it.

This movie is still top tier 💯 This was a major “Do I want to BE Katniss Everdeen or do I WANT Katniss Everdeen” for me 😂

The Hunger Games looks poised to usher in a brand new hit franchise and deserves all the credit it gets for its confrontational subject matter, delicately-orchestrated fight sequences and sci-fi sensibilities. For teen audiences, films don't get much darker - or smarter - than this.

An effective entertainment, and Jennifer Lawrence is strong and convincing in the central role. But the film leapfrogs obvious questions in its path, and avoids the opportunities sci-fi provides for social criticism.

What's remarkable is the lack of cheese. Tacky effects, corny dialogue and creaky performances are all shown the door. We repeat: not the new Twilight.
