Synopsis
When ten-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) moves in with his eccentric uncle (Jack Black), his life gets a lot more interesting – and dangerous. Sure, getting to move in to a mysterious old mansion full of wonders and oddities may sound like any kid’s dream, but most mansions don’t come with a particularly ominous built-in tick-tocking sound. In addition to meeting his uncle’s friend Mrs. Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett), Lewis discovers their secretive world of warlocks and witches. And then Lewis, you know, accidentally awakens the dead. Whoops. Based on the classic children’s book written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is directed by Eli Roth (Hostel) and written by Eric Kripke (creator of TV’s Supernatural). The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.

chloeSep 23, 2018Eli did a good job at capturing that Amblin feel of yesteryear. It's a film for kids so a little tough for me to judge. The kids in the audience seemed to be digging it. Really liked the killer Jack-o'-Lanterns. Screened at the DGA West.

Although the acting is strong, wizards and warlocks just aren’t my thing. It’s not a bad movie, just a bit weird for my taste. If you’re into this kind of story, you’ll probably enjoy it has some solid moments, along with a few creepy ones. Not for me, but it might be for you.

The movie has the pleasingly demented texture of early Tim Burton. It bears the logo of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin company and is seen from a Spielbergian child’s-eye view.

Since the movie is in such a hurry, we’re not given much chance to soak in this strangeness. Making up for it: Black is paired with Blanchett, who plays a neighboring witch in smashing violet skirt ensembles; the two rat-a-tat insults at each other like a vaudevillian comedy duo.

The House With a Clock in Its Walls is easily Eli Roth’s best motion picture, and that’s not an attempt to damn the film with faint praise. It’s a spooky and amusing piece of family-friendly Halloween cinema, sharply produced and mostly effective, told with skill and panache.
