Synopsis

Three friends' road trip turns terrifying when they witness a murder in a gated community. Trapped inside, hunted by residents who blame them, their bond fractures as a charismatic yet sinister patriarch closes in.
Moviegoers are saying
"The Gates" divides audiences as a Get Out-inspired thriller that tackles racism through the lens of three Black friends trapped in a hostile gated community after witnessing a murder. While viewers appreciate Mason Gooding's performance and the film's cult classic potential, most find it disappointingly predictable and shallow, with many paying tribute to James Van Der Beek's final role following his passing.

While “The Gates” itself isn’t a total smash, it’s a more than sturdy final effort from a beloved actor.

The Gates' is constantly on the verge of getting better, sometimes on the verge of getting good, but it never quite gets there. It’s a missed opportunity for thrills, social commentary, humor and/or horror.

Dialogue, quirky incidents and a general acceptance that this is the unfortunate way life is make this more than just a genre exercise, though hardly a breathtaking grabber of “Get Out” proportions.
