Moviegoers are saying
Reviewers treat this as gloriously ridiculous popcorn cinema: one viewer jokes about Ja Rule's street-race bet for a threesome and his "Nooooooo!!!" scream, while another calls the car-slides-under-truck stunt the franchise's coolest moment. The consensus is that the film is best enjoyed as a big, loud, unapologetic time capsule, with a crowd of "MUSTSEEBRO" tags even as several reviewers laugh at its campy simplicity.

Hard to believe this simple story about street racers jacking vcrs is in the same franchise as a movie where The Rock redirects a torpedo with his hands.

Madeline Spethman lovedThe Fast and the Furious6/10 definitely my favorite of the series not just because it’s the original i just think it’s the most unique i guess is the right word for it? it’s not recycled plots and casts and cars. definitely was the gateway to my semi-interest in cars

RayRay lovedThe Fast and the FuriousThis was so dumb yet I did love it. Crazy nostalgic even tho I’ve never watched it. Reminded me of old PS2 games I used to play. It’s the kinda script I would’ve written as a 4th grader, but that made it so charming. Nice character work all things considered. Fun movie
Furkan likedThe Fast and the FuriousA solid cult classic that started it all.

Better equipped to deal with the workings of nitro-injection systems than human emotions, director Rob Cohen's film grows less assured the more time it spends with its characters, particularly through its dull middle section. It does earn points for trying, however, and while Walker is a cipher, Diesel has enough personality for both of them.

The A.V. Club
In seamlessly interweaving top-notch CGI and incredible stuntwork, Cohen has delivered some of the finest auto-action ever put on screen.
Adam Smith
Empire
The story is overly familiar and the characters are all types, but Cohen's cinematic techniques make The Fast and the Furious watchable.
