I overall enjoyed The Book of Clarence, which hooks you as a unique approach to the kind of religious satire we’ve seen before, but right when we get to the good part it becomes pretty thematically and narratively aimless. Luckily Jeymes Samuel makes really good looking…
Sydney🚀Oct 12, 2023enjoyed it til it got Jesus-y in a mushy gushy sentimental way instead of a fun slay way
SophiaJan 11, 2024It’s got that Dogma thing where it’s simultaneously a satire and a sermon, and it’s got that Hamilton thing where upending Western perception is half the point—what I’m saying is I should like this—but it’s mostly a meandering Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead for the…

Painting white Jesus at the end was the funniest scene of the whole movie
cheyenne ;)Jan 11, 2024that is what i mean when i say commit to the bit
izzy craw4dOct 11, 2023will be talking about this a bit more in the future but i’ve got to say how grateful i am to see a black film on this scale, so individualistic and ambitious. it took me from every emotion from thrills, laughs and pure emotion, absolutely made for the big screen like the…

An audacious take on a biblical epic, Jeymes Samuel’s follow up to The Harder They Fall, once again mixes genres, and works with a predominantly black cast injecting a modern perspective on a number of biblical tales. What starts off as a stoner comedy, leans much more into…
Kevflix And ChillJan 3, 2024I can't wait to convince my future kids that not only does LaKeith Stanfield have a twin, but he's also the Messiah.
CinemaCollectJan 10, 2024“The Book of Clarence,” the religious epic by multi-hyphenate talent Jeymes Samuel, is a handsomely crafted picture that simply loses the plot. Built around Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield), a street hustler living in A.D. 33 Jerusalem, Samuel’s script is a farcical…

7.6 - An enigma. It takes risks everywhere: camera work, music, genre & art bending & blending, & most notably in its writing & biblical adaptation. Unsure if it’s more righteous or blasphemous. I grew up religious & now am not, so I connected with this in interesting ways.
An odd take on the bible. It's unclear what the final message is supposed to be as they kind of contradict themselves the entire film. They have scenes where they say atheism means you will never be loved by God or Jesus, then the next they literally show God or Jesus loving him

At the start of this there’s lots of fun comedy, the style & dialogue work given the setting, most of which has a fun rhythm to it. It takes its time & though the underlying pinning of satire on how race is seen in biblical stories is not lost on me, it doesn’t take it in any…
I honestly don't have a clue what this is. The genre confuses me, the story confuses me, the acting confuses me, the design confuses me, and the cast confuses me. I felt so relieved when it finished. The only thing I know for sure is that they took risks making this. The best thing about this for…
8.5/10 I went in to this skeptical of potential mockery of Christianity. Instead I thought it was a brilliantly creative story. Comedy sprinkled throughout, an interesting take on different Bible characters and a really good redemption story all while remaining fairly respectful

This movie was a genius mix of hood classics like “Friday” and biblical period pieces like “Ben-Hur.” While not for everybody, it had thought provoking social commentary. It’s a fictional story that takes place along side the traditional Bible story line. Not blasphemous at all.
People who are big on religion/the Bible or too technical about it might not like this and call it blasphemous. Frankly, that’s fine. It takes a more mythological & comedic approach to a biblical story with interesting music and camera choices. Lakeith Stanfield is fun to watch.

The most blasphemous movie I’ve ever seen in my life
KDKenea Deklebest movie so far for 2023. Hopefully people get the message that "There ain't no man named Jesus who is god. but there is only God who chooses many messiahs and we are not supposed to idolize and worship them. But fesr God and keep his commands.

I definitely think you have to have at least the basic understanding of the Bible to know what’s happening in the movie, but it’s still a great movie.
