With its tragicomic center and its unwavering compassion, if Tender Loving Care is indeed Mike Leigh’s final film, it’s a beautiful note to end on.

Exploring the different kinds of emotional labor at work and in the home, Tender Loving Care highlights its characters’ different caregiving roles, from doting parents to dealing with difficult cases on the job. Leigh shows how much work it takes to be there for one another, and how deeply people support those they care about. In quiet moments, Leigh and his actors say so much just by quietly being present for their loved ones and the people they’re charged with helping.

As great as anything he’s ever produced—a small-scale domestic drama that reverberates loudly, and urgently, as a celebration of everyday compassion and solidarity.
