It's a bit convoluted, but it's a hell of a lot of fun. Like a weird mixture of Snatch and Natural Born Killers. I liked it a lot. But, in case you wanted to know why I really liked it, I'll say this. Chris Pine plays a psychopathic redneck murderer, Common actually acts…
ag.movAug 1, 2025An amphetamine-fueled existential crisis firing on all cylinders, tightly packed for all of us. Soo...just pure fun. Wildly chaotic, seemingly for no greater reason than Carnahan’s urge, maybe even a half-hearted attempt to channel someone else’s style. I’d seen this movie…
werskuNov 2, 2012The premise is actually enjoyable, with some wonderful over the top performances. I really didn't care for the energy drink aesthetic though....

Smokin' Aces is a film that manages to cram every bit of exposition into the span of about 5 minutes and then goes absolutely incomprehensibly bananas for the remaining 103 minutes.
mike hotdogNov 14, 2021As he has evolved as a director Joe Carnahan, the director has managed to step out from under the shadow of Matthew Vaughn and Guy Ritchie, two directors that clearly heavily influenced his work. Although many seem to dislike this film, since I watched it on television a…
Rafael "Mister Movie" JovineMay 10, 2021When I saw this in theater I thought the funniest thing in the whole world was Ben Affleck getting gunned down by Nazis in the first 35 minutes of the movie. I mean he was the douche nozzle who had just appeared in Daredevil, Gigli, Jersey Girl, and a film literally called…

A Gigantic Illusion: Between Genius and Madness This massive, star-studded illusion is packed with cool one-liners and brutal, early-2000s music video editing. The film doesn’t even know what it wants to be—but the chaos definitely holds an incredibly fascinating…
FrensmenNov 26, 2013For something random and completely entertaining to watch at 2:00 in the morning, this was exactly what I needed. It's a mindless fun time, with cool performances and crazy action. It never feels like it's actual running time and it's definitely good enough that I'll come…
Ryan FrancisOct 1, 2018manic, depraved nonsense aimed squarely at 12-year-old boys. and me. assuming there’s a difference.

- Larry Daley is "meh" onSmokin' Aces
I feel like this movie wants us to think it’s somehow smarter or better put together than it actually is. Like the cast is stacked and they all do a decent job in their roles. But the plot is actually just stupid and is juggling way too many incoherent threads at once
Albin is "meh" onSmokin' AcesA mess but still entertaining
V lovedSmokin' AcesI’ve seen this 3 times since it came out 20 years ago. It’s been a long time since the last time I saw it bc I forgot how many people were in this. Ryan Reynolds was probably the least famous person of everyone in it, when it came out. It’s action packed, & the characters are 🙌🏼
- Stoofman is "meh" onSmokin' Aces
I don't know, I enjoyed bits of it, but at the same time it was just such an "all over the place" movie that even though you could keep up with each characters story, it was just annoying in a sense. It was good, don't get me wrong, just not my type of movie, ending was cool
DarkEco likedSmokin' AcesAn absolutely STACKED cast of assassins and FBI agents converging on a single target and intertwining with each other. The final minutes info dump twist after all the fun, frenetic action and Reynolds’ reaction is probably my favorite dramatic scene of his career.
Mark Bateman likedSmokin' Aces8/10 Wow, what a mass with a slight twice ending. Interesting corrupt political FBI Assignation plot with a mass cast. Priceless. Recommend (turn off your brain and watch the ride).
- Bugga likedSmokin' Aces
Interesting progression. Didn’t care much for the plot but the actors and characters were all pretty interesting and contrasted well against each other.
Rohan is "meh" onSmokin' AcesThe cast is so much potential. Unfortunately unrealised with average writing and plot didn’t flow. Could have been great, was just average. 5/10
Marshall Scott likedSmokin' AcesAn extremely fun movie that is definitely one of the more entertaining action movies out there. Definitely a must watch. 7/10

In 2002, Carnahan made an intense and violent little cop film, Narc, with Jason Patric and Ray Liotta. He seemed to have absorbed the influences of John Cassavetes and Martin Scorsese and come up with a style of his own. I was a fan of that movie, but Smokin’ Aces feels like Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill pushed much further along into lethal absurdity.

Smokin' Aces blows some cool smoke rings until it makes the very un-cool mistake of overstaying its welcome.

Variety
Carnahan does have an oddball sense of comic timing; what his picture lacks in hilarity it recuperates with a well-developed, albeit mumbling, sense of the absurd.
