Rebecca is all about the love affair between the late Mrs. De Winter and Mrs. Danvers, which every other relationship in the film revolves about and around. I don't care if Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine are happy in the slightest. He is perfectly beastly to her,…

I quietly say “I am Mrs. de Winter now” to myself whenever I’m about to go into an important meeting
Merkin MuffleyOct 22, 2017Q: Who is your favorite cinematic ghost? A: Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca. Q: Not Patrick Swayze, or Beetlejuice, or someone from The Others or The Sixth Sense? Casper, maybe? A: No, no. It's Mrs. Danvers. Q: She's not a real ghost, though. A: Well, she arrives and leaves…
MariaApr 30, 2022Alfred Hitchcock’s most psychologically complex characters are, often, the queer ones. The director’s incorporation of gay subtext into a select few of his films has the effect of forcing him, even if only out of fetish, to linger on the mentality of those characters. So,…

Best Picture Oscar winner 1941 (13th Academy Awards) My Rating: 7/10 Nominated for 11 Oscar’s and won 2. Is it my favorite Hitchcock film? No. But seeing as this was his first American film, it’s still really good. Psychological thriller was invented because of Hitchcock and it has all those…
Great to revisit Hitchcock. Intoxicating story w/ unsettling undertone, twists & turns, and the usual Hitchcock delights: suspense, subtle humor, quirky side characters. Olivier & Fontaine are fantastic, and the cinematography/lighting is gorgeous. Ending is only half-satisfying.

I might get some hate for this, but I don’t think this holds up. About 1.5 hours in it was interesting but it had no payoff. The direction it goes for the last 45 minutes fails to match any of the previous themes of the film. The protagonist had no role in the plot.
One of the best suspense films of all time. Hitchcock directs it masterfully with some amazing cinematography. There are so many gothic elements in this one and I love it. Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier are great in the lead roles. Highly recommend this one.

"come, let me show you my dead wife's lingerie! oh don't mind those stains all over them lmao wasn't me!! " - mrs danvers probably (★★★½)
Hitchcock hits a stride a little late. Too long. If I was the Mrs, I’d have thrown hands at Danvers. Glad Favell caught one on the chin.
