Synopsis
The first live-action movie to explore the world of Pokémon stars… Ryan Reynolds? The Deadpool star voices Pikachu, the furry yellow icon of the Pokémon franchise. When detective Harry Goodman disappears, his son Tim (Justice Smith) teams up with Harry’s partner to track down the missing man. That partner is none other than the wise-cracking Pikachu, with whom Tim is unexpectedly able to communicate.
Detective Pikachu is a surprising and hilarious adventure on the neon-lit streets of Ryme City, where humans and Pokémon live side by side. As Tim and Pikachu meet new Pokémon during their search for Tim’s father, they uncover a conspiracy that could unravel their peaceful existence. Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird) also appears as the cub reporter Lucy, who is on the trail of a big story; while Ken Watanabe (Godzilla) plays Lt. Yoshida.

Look: when Pokémon are onscreen, I'm happy. So luckily that's most of the movie.

When psyduck said "Psyduuuck 😱!!!", I really felt that
alorMay 9, 2019You could just hear that cinematographer and production designer going “HELL YEAH BLADE RUNNER VIBES!” That 1st AC was having trouble with the focus pulling early on though, wasn’t he? This is basically a cartoon brought to life onscreen in all the best ways. Super campy,…
Georgia ColeyMay 18, 2019No part of this even remotely resembles a good movie but some of the Pokemon are really cute and you can never underestimate just how important that is

Even without being very knowledgeable on this franchise and just knowing the basics POKÉMON Detective Pikachu is a fun time with great visuals, a solid cast, and nice world-building. The character designs were true to the original from what I know and I think it worked well.
Wasn’t really impressed. Maybe this movie was for the die hard fans but I just thought it was mediocre

used to collect pokémon cards when i was a kid but wow that was so immersive. the cgi was top tier, they really put a lot of details into it. the story is pretty simple, but just a fun watch nonetheless. 7.5 / 10
Last two movies I watched was Detective Pikachu and Sonic 2. Might be going through a nostalgia triggered midlife crisis earlier than expected. Send help.

Recently got into the Pokemon TCG hobby so I wanted to revisit this. It’s just a fun live action feature for a beloved and storied franchise with tons of fanfare. Seeing so many Pokemon represented keeps you engaged to identify ‘em all. Decent story, good performances. Just fun!
This was showing for free at college, so my roommate and I took a chance. To our surprise, we enjoyed it. Nostalgia carried it I think. It is not a high-quality piece of cinema or anything, more of a guilty pleasure you will probably enjoy if you liked Pokemon as a kid.

very serious for a talking mouse movie
Metacritic
While there ample missteps—a villain the audience doesn’t really care about, a lack of epic fights that brought the original audience to both the games and shows, and a predictable plot—the film manages to be a hell of a lot of fun, capturing the spirit of its source material as effectively as a well-aimed Poké Ball.
Sure, Detective Pikachu is messy and predictable, but the fact that director Rob Letterman and his team embrace the inherent absurdity of the Pokémon franchise as a whole means it’s a hoot.
Despite its sizable budget, Detective Pikachu has a similarly run-down quality. What story there is barely makes sense, and it feels as if large chunks have been taken out at random. But in a world packed full of franchise-extending would-be blockbusters, there’s something strangely appealing about its patchiness.
