Deep-fried friar Ferrara esoterica. A sweeping political backdrop shot as communal faces by candlelight, interspersed with Padre Pio's spiritual journey -- altogether unbound struggle. It's another example that shows how important 1998's New Rose Hotel is in Ferrara's…
Ziglet_mirJun 9, 2023Ferrara is one of my favourite filmmakers in the world. it doesn’t surprise me that he cast LaBeouf, nor does it surprise me that he found resonance in helping “guide” him onto the right path after he went down a dark tunnel of alcoholism. Ferrara was raided Catholic, was…
Logan KennyOct 27, 2022Abel Ferrara's latest is set early in Italy's interwar period, and puts the story of the titular priest's tortured spiritual (and, to a much lesser extent, political) journey in conversation with the era's rising left- and right-wing movements. Ferrara's late-period movies…

It is very much a movie playing around ideas, sacred and political, as they can be filtered through Ferrara's immediate style. Ideology - political and religious - arriving at the body. The scenes with LaBeouf have a certain raw power that's recognizable Ferrarian and as…

eddieJun 2, 2023Furthers the smeary digital impressionism of Tommaso & Zeros and Ones to reach out towards a filmic texture & language that we have probably never seen & outside of this Ferrara era will probably never see again. A religious & political & historical piece of cinematic…

Not a bad movie per se, but in trying to show the socio-political tensions that were boiling during Padre Pio's time, the movie loses focus and becomes a political drama that happens to have him in it. It also portrays Padre Pio as a troubled priest rather than showing why…
TheDarkKnightJFJun 25, 2023Por mim era 120 min do Shia LaBeouf saindo no braço com o demônio. Talvez na próxima. Comentei no youtube: https://youtu.be/KruAqSuh1aA
Arthur TuotoJan 11, 2025Ferrara’s PASSION. A blind spot in one of my favorite filmmakers’ career, fueled by the need to do some research. Shia continues to be one of the most gifted actors using his previous blockbuster cache to take on challenging roles, almost feels like atonement for his “No…

Many different themes and concepts that show the tumultuous times post WW1. Padre Pio served as the base for all people to come to the church and unburden themselves regardless of class, politics or health.
Padre Pio had little to do with the actual story. The movie is not what I was expecting at all
