Synopsis
It’s 1982, and Taeko (Daisy Ridley) is 27 years old, unmarried, and has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to visit her relatives in the countryside, and as the train travels through the night, memories flood back of her younger years: the first immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys. At the station she is met by young farmer Toshio (Dev Patel), and the encounters with him begin to reconnect her to forgotten longings. In lyrical switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates the arc of her life, and wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self.

my god this is flooring. its framing device should be so stilted--here's a movie consisting of random flashbacks to a woman's life at age 10! but it feels so seamless and true to life. who among us doesn't randomly fixate on the small injustices done to us as children, or,…
David SimsFeb 28, 2014Disney won't release this in the US because it acknowledges the existence of menstruation. But Pom Poko, with its plot centered around the magical powers of giant testicles, gets a fancy DVD release with a BluRay apparently on the horizon.

I've only seen two of his movies so far and I'm already prepared to declare Isao Takahata one of the greatest writer/directors in animation history
James (Schaffrillas)Feb 2, 2020“If today’s no good, you’ll have tomorrow. If tomorrow’s no good, you’ll have the next day.”the fact that this film perfectly nails how society was/is obsessed with controlling female bodies in every moment of their existence as birthing pods and housewife material and at…
nadine 🔪Nov 20, 2014For various reasons, the themes of memory, specifically of self-discovery through memory, hit home tonight. This quiet drama about a woman's unbidden journey through specific memories is a work of simple parallels of change and growing up, of dreams and connections, and the…

Isao Takahata absolutely cooked with this movie this rly is the most grounded Ghibli film and just feels so raw and authentic. The family drama moments just feel so real. I love when ghibli does realistic movies cause they stand out so much in the best way
Okay listen, the movie was good and all but the main characters grown up design just freaked me out. It made me so uncomfortable to watch and sometimes I got kinda pissed cause she wouldn't stop talking about herself. Love the young version of her and her childhood flashbacks tho

after watching Ocean waves a while ago, this is a huge improvement. very similar to the story, but from the POV of a female and definitely does it better in my opinion.
great movie about revisiting your past and the struggles of embracing it, i watched it at a time when i was facing a lot of my own struggles i haven’t fully reconciled with. this movie came at the best time for me ❤️ and done in such a beautifully nostalgic and gentle way

I actually rlly liked this one. A slower paced, more grounded Studio Ghibli movie but had a decent story about your past and learning about yourself years later.
This was a very difficult movie to watch, yet also an extremely powerful one at that
