Synopsis

From the producers of MINARI and MOONLIGHT comes the next great coming-of-age journey. Fourteen-year-old Olmo and his family are struggling to make ends meet in 1979 New Mexico. Due to an illness that keeps his father Nestor confined to his bed, his mother Cecilia, his sister Ana, and even he himself must contribute to the daily caretaking responsibilities. Olmo, in the throes of selfish adolescence, would much rather hang out with his best friend Miguel and try to impress his beautiful next-door neighbor Nina than take care of his dad. And when Nina finally invites him to a party on the day that he’s been left alone with his dad, Olmo will do whatever he can to get out of his duties, embarking on a journey of mischief and chaos. In his desperate attempt to escape his home life, he will come to realize that the place of his deepest pain is also where he will find solace: with his family.

Moviegoers are saying
Olmo splits its audience down the middle: reviewers who were moved call it a 'well-acted film that tugs at the heartstrings,' praising Gustavo Sánchez Parra's 'compelling, dysfunctional, layered performances,' while skeptics find it 'sleepy,' 'tame,' and too 'twee' to justify its sincerity. Many agree the second half wins people over, and the bittersweet family story lands for viewers who can laugh through the tears. Expect a quiet, divisive watch rather than a crowd-pleaser.

Authenticity is the greatest strength of “Olmo,” although it is sometimes a crutch to the film’s meandering pace.

The casting is pitch-perfect, capturing both the love — and the tension — in a household where Mexican immigrant parents address their children in Spanish and receive answers from their Mexican American children in English.

This chronicle of a self-absorbed teenager learning to step outside his own world may be familiar in its broad outlines, but Fernando Eimbcke’s maturity and lack of judgment imbues it with a warmth that makes it feel fresh.
