Less emphasis on angry white man learning life lessons. More of Jaiyah’s story. More about the other members of the team and community. More about American Samoa.  Please and thank you.

NEXT GOAL WINS is self-aware of the sports genre cliches & white savior stereotype it’s playing with. Taika Waititi tries to make light of them with a vibrant exaggeration of a true story designed not to be a high piece of art but to simply have fun & make audiences feel…

Based on an acclaimed documentary, the film looks to be asking us to fill in the many gaps in its Swiss-cheese narrative.

Bland photography and perfunctory writing are the very least of my issues with Next Goal Wins, a movie-shaped stain on the class of entertainment known as the sports-underdog comedy.

The film is a shoddily made and strikingly unfunny attempt to tell an interesting story in an uninteresting way.
