Nikyatu Jusu’s NANNY… wow. An unreal Anna Diop, lush cinematography by Rina Yang, and devastating use of folktales by Jusu. Such a smart film about the exploitation of African immigrant mothers, and how often they’re excluded from the American dream. People need to see this…

immigrant mothers are just so strong and go through so many difficulties and anxieties trying to build a better life for their children - I’m glad this movie shows that

I enjoyed the beautiful look of this film a lot and the drama was engaging but the supernatural/horror aspects were a bit too vague and the end was abrupt.

absolutely loved all of the visuals, but what the hell? the writing was lacking, the ending was rushed, and honestly, all of the horror bits felt so out of place. i really didn't find this engaging at all. take out the few bad dreams and hallucinations, and all you've got…

I can't complain about the performances, or should I say the performance because Anna goddess Diop carried the whole movie on her back, and the plot isn't bad, but the pace… I get they were trying to build the atmosphere at first but maybe they went too far with it, even…

there’s a moment when rose (the kid aisha takes care of) is running around screaming and aisha briefly watches her pass with the exhausted death glare of an overworked, underpaid nanny and i really felt seen

What even was this movie? It is so uneven in tone, has no idea what kind of movie it’s trying to be whatsoever. If it had stuck to one vibe it may have been redeemable but as is it’s a mish mash off too many things that all equal nothing.

I'm shaking, I don't even have words right now but this film was everything and then some. The mix of horror and West African folktales, the consistent water imagery, the twists and Anna Diop's performance left me all floored. A very deserving Sundance winner

In her elegantly unsettling portrait of an invisible woman straddling two notions of home — far from what she’s known, working inside a perilous system — Jusu is letting us know she’s got all diasporic women employed by wealthy families on her mind. And that their fears can easily become nightmares.

Nanny seeps into your pores, stings like salt in a throbbing wound and doesn’t require what some horror fans might—conversely—wish appeared.
