Synopsis
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city's sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

I have seen God. And his name is Dev Patel. So much sauce. Culturally impactful, juiced up revenge narrative, met with the brilliant eye of Dev Patel. Absolutely loved this. Soaked in style, whiplash-inducing chaos, and a soundtrack that booms.
George CarmiMar 12, 2024The fusion of adrenaline and grit to create something nuclear. Sequences are composed with such a ferocity that it’s easy to dismiss the beauty in the basics— his framing, the frenetic editing, the way the camera moves with conviction. Maybe the best thing is the passion,…

Got to see the world premiere at SXSW and my now the future looks brighter than ever for cultural storytellers. Hats off to Dev Patel for pulling off the seemingly impossible and looking devilishly handsome doing it.
First off, I’m very impressed with the fact that Dev Patel co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the leading role of this film. I really enjoyed the brutal action scenes and the visceral cinematography, even though it was a little nauseating and hard to see at times

Dev Patel killed it in a great way. If you like John Wick or other revenge films, this is perfect for you. The story behind this getting made and how it was purchased and shelved into Jordan Peele came in and gave it a theatrical release is crazy. Support this film, it’s so good!
8.8/10 Dev Patel deserves so much praise. (Not a popular opinion) I wasn’t a huge fan of the John Wick sequels but could always respect the fight choreography and directing. This movie was like if John Wick had an actual good storyline and his character had depth. Loved it

Wow. Quick hits breakdown: -Amazing action sequences (there was one in first half that legit had me like 😮 for 15 straight minutes). Some similarities to John wick wrt pace, sophistication, etc -VERY violent (I audibly went OH!!! A few times) -Well told story of revenge I really enjoyed this.…
As a fan of hyper-violent action, this was definitely worth the 10 bucks and change. As a not fan of heavy sexual situations, I definitely didn’t enjoy all of this. If India is truly like this, my heart breaks for the people in this environment, but I see what they are going for

Incredible fighting scenes and story. One of the best revenge films of all time. Like an Indian John Wick.
An amazing and original story by the action man himself, Patel! Absolutely loved the whole story, kept me and my company entertained and hooked from the beginning.
Metacritic
Patel’s desire to make something more than a straightforward action film is admirable, especially since he had to juggle responsibilities in front of and behind the camera simultaneously to do so. Monkey Man suggests he’s got potential as a filmmaker in the future. In the present, his directorial debut is the sort of genre exercise that makes you realize creating a “straightforward” action movie is not so straightforward.
Monkey Man may be a silly-sounding title but the story it tells is anything but silly.
The result is a stylish thriller that’s also a cathartic unleashing of Patel as a performer and storyteller. With Monkey Man, he asserts himself as someone who can break the boundaries Hollywood typically establishes for actors like him.
