Moviegoers are saying
Christian Petzold's 'Miroirs No. 3' divides audiences with its minimalist approach to grief and human connection, featuring another captivating Paula Beer performance that has viewers universally smitten. While some find it 'minor Petzold' that plays the hits, others praise its subtle emotional depth and that standout Four Seasons scene that's being called one of the year's best.

Miroirs No. 3 has nothing on Phoenix, Petzold’s post–World War II masterpiece about a woman haunting her own life, but it is entrancing. The key to its unsettling pleasures is the way it acknowledges that what is happening is disturbing only if one of its characters says it is.

These cinematic allusions are catnip to film lovers, and while they’re pleasurable to consider they’re so delicately woven into the story that they never distract from the characters or the emotion, or edge into directorial cleverness.
