    i. he's in your mind. ii. he's in the air that you breath and the laugh that you take and the hitch in your throat when you tell him that after you die, you are nothing and you return to the earth from whence you came. (you will never see him again after tonight, will…

This is Elaine May catching you watching The Godfather and forcing you to smoke the whole pack. Sublime.

"That doesn't scare you? To think that one day you'll die. You'll be over. You won't be anything, you won't know anything. Be nothing." A beautifully messy chemical combination of Elaine May’s dark, unsentimental New Hollywood portraits of desperate and destructive men…

Need proof the world isn't as great as it used to be (in regards to movie-going options anyway)? At one point Cassevetes as Nicky gets the urge to go to the movies. "It's after midnight, where are you going to go to the movies?" Peter Falk's Mikey asks. "There's the all…

This movie really psychologically confused me. It made me think for days trying to solve something that was simply complicated with no real answer. And I’m glad it did.

elaine may wrote and directed it. peter falk and john cassevetes acted it. all three brilliantly. a true depiction of a friendship that has already run its course.

The two main characters weren't very likable so I didn't care for their fate whatsoever. Super long drawn out scenes that were awkward.

One of the most innovative, engaging, and insightful films of that turbulent era of American moviemaking.

A neglected 1976 gem from a neglected Hollywood genius. May was known for her comedy but here proves absolutely fluent in the language of mobster lowlife, with an edge of caustic, disillusioned humour, and strange yet shockingly real outbursts of violence in which cafe owners and bus drivers are suddenly roughed up.

Clearly May is invested in the material — she wrote it — and deserves credit for creating a fruitfully improvisational atmosphere. Yet she doesn’t leave a very distinct signature here, such as the social satire she brought to A New Leaf and The Heartbreak Kid.
