I bought my tickets in advance and this was a HUGE disappointment. Took my partner to see it and was not impressed. Not worth it to see in the theaters. Also kinda depressing and a sad look on life and love.
This movie was made worse by the fact AMC DeKalb refused to turn ON either the AC or the ceiling fans. Deplorable
not your typical romantic comedy, but it does pose a lot of questions around modern dating. at times it feels like a horror film and at others very sweet.
Marketing really failed on this one. The overall theme kept getting lost, as if each time I sensed I understood the message it was completely wiped and reinvented. It had so many good parts but more bad parts to go along with it. The writing was mid.
A sweet, simple story that nonetheless plumbs the substance and mystery of relationships, while offering “easter eggs” and echoes for the movie buff.

I felt like the movie was really thought-provoking and also subversive. Beautifully shot and very quotable, I look forward to having more long conversations about modern dating jumping off of themes in this movie. The dialogue didn’t really feel specific enough for real…

I went in with zero expectations and found myself liking it more than I expected. Great scene shots throughout NYC and storytelling with stellar performances.

Fine! A cute enough rom com. Interesting thoughts about what we “expect” or “deserve” from a partner.

Materialists falters most when it tries to mesh its competing aims: to deliver a throwback love story while also deconstructing the reality of modern dating. Instead, in the end, the film resembles the very world it tries to critique, offering a litany of observations about finding The One without ever substantially arguing for any of them.
Materialists is dry and ironic and “honest” while laying bare the hopes that we all cling to that love isn’t really as materialistic as she’s saying. But the rare air of the artificial, archetypal world she sets out to make her big statement in leaves the viewer grasping for not just a breath of fresh air, but hope.
Inconsistent but never insubstantial, Materialists is far from perfect, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of a date.
