Atom User Reviews for Mary Queen of Scots
Great performances all around. The sets and costumes where exquisite and the setting was gorgeous. Instead of pitting one queen against the other as I expected they decided to make it about how evil men are. The concept of men was the villain of the piece. There was mainly one evil guy pulling strings later on. The two sovereigns relationship was carefully woven and interesting. Definitely worth a watch! Many underlying themes to wrap your brain around.
I was blown away by this movie. I’m a sucker for historical dramas. It’s an accurate depiction of how life was back then from the costumes and makeup to the accents and language used. It’s such an inspiring movie, great story line. Hats off to Mary and Elizabeth!! The actresses were so authentic and realistic. A real must see!!!
Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie (for how little screentime she had,) were fantastic. I knew the history but, man, some of the events were tough to watch. Enjoyed seeing it brought to life on the big screen.
The best movie about these two that I've ever seen. Absolutely superb acting and detail. While I don't know the historical accuracy of the finer details, it kept true to the heart of their story.
Bad
Saoirse Killed It. Is at the Top of Her Game
Margot and saoirse give the best performance of their careers.
yawn
Not worth theater ticket price
Great movie specially the scene between Saoirse and Margo that was everything
The acting and costumes were great. Just wish it had been a little more raw. I felt like the real history was just glossed over and was left wanting more.
Saoirse Ronan puts on an acting clinic while Margot Robbie shines through. The film is powerful and tells a great story without you looking for the exit like most period dramas. Worth the time to see it.
Interesting period piece. Typical English movie as it will be slow for some. Yet entertains
great movie based on history! gave us lots to talk about as we left the theater
When in history was Lord Darnley ever believed to be gay?
love this movie! must c. I may go c it again.
Left out a few major facts. Beautiful movie, just don’t be fooled in thinking this is a true story.
You need ti have a background about the royals for you to understand the movie
Beautiful cinematography but the cohesiveness of the storyline was...confusing
really loved the cast and how they made you feel for Mary. i thought this kove was very well done and very emotional, as a parent I truly felt Mary's heartbreak for James.
This movie was super beyond good, I didn’t think it was going to be this great!
Nit the best...
History is there to use as a resource. The writers decided to add fiction to make it more of a drama. Don't expect it to be correct,or list the events or reasons correctly. Focuses on why Mary wanted an hier and her plan to rule the two nations. ultimately, she won even if she didnt live to see it.
As someone who loves history I enjoyed this. The acting was really wonderful. I was always convinced that emotions were genuine. Unfortunately the storyline was a bit hard to follow. it didnt feel like there was a lot of continuity between scenes. I would have liked to see more of Elizabeth, but overall I enjoyed the movie. I would say wait until it comes out. its enjoyable, but not date night material if you get me.
True to the story. Truly amazing movie
amazing true story retold once again
A must see if you like history but don’t like to read about it
I enjoyed every minute of this movie...great supporting cast and the two Queens were exceptional...I highly recommend it.
Interesting movie for history buffs, excellent cast. Some historical inaccuracies but hey, it’s a movie. I recommend seeing this movie
Very good Historical drama. I would recommend this movie. Great picture , acting, story line, and accuracy to true events.
Excellent acting!
positive note: The language & accents were tremendous, it was filmed in Scotland and England get ready for beautiful landscapes, the story line had more reality that previous stories. negative note: I wished it were longer
Terrible
It’s slow but I’m a huge history buff so I didn’t mind it. The story is incredibly accurate to the actual story and does a great job of showing what it was life to be a woman ruling a nation in that time (because obviously I would know). 😂
Great film! I love the performances and directing. It will probably be nominated for some awards.
Quite a captivating story. The performance was great.
A gorgeously shot & acted Mary & Elizabeth retelling. The good legend of Mary, beautifully told.
Missed opportunity.
Historically anachronistic, inaccurate. Contrived script, stilted plot. Unfair portrayal of Elizabeth as a weak, paranoid, homely ruler. Disappointing. Not worth it. Don't waste your time or money.
Great movie for those abreast of the history. Very true to actual history.
Literally gave me chills.
Took too long to build the plot intensity for 25-30 mins of an actually interesting movie
was well done but movie was slow moving
Loved it!!!
strong women looking to joint to countries with noting but haters. The vision wasn't for now but the future to come.
Mary is my ancestor and I learned a lot
Saoiris Ronan stole the show!!
Leading Ladies are excellent!
great performances
Kind of a sleeper
Metacritic
Ronan is good (as usual) as the spirited and rather haughty Mary, making the most of what, to be fair, is the plum role.
In real life, Mary and Elizabeth never met, but this film, directed by Josie Rourke and written by Beau Willimon, stages numerous interactions, many of them accompanied by flaring nostrils.
