Synopsis
A practically perfect nanny knows that her job is never done, which is why Mary Poppins Returns finds the magical caregiver (Emily Blunt) reuniting with her grown-up former charges, Michael and Jane Banks (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) in Depression-era London. In addition to meeting a whole new generation of Banks kids (played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson), Mary’s latest adventure will introduce a bright lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Mary’s cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep), and even the Balloon Lady (Angela Landsbury). Directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods), the film also stars Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and David Warner – as well as Dick Van Dyke himself, in a new role.

Anyone who hates this movie is in need of a spoonful of sugar
My version of hell will be; I’m trapped in a theater while this movie plays on the loop for eternity.
Metacritic
For me, the moment where it all came together was during Blunt’s haunting rendition of The Place Where Lost Things Go, a heartbreaking lullaby that has something of the spine-tingling melancholy charm of Feed the Birds. Watching this sequence, I noticed I had started crying, and realised that I was safe – the movie’s spell was working and the magic was still here.
It’s well crafted, well acted, and features some terrific live-action/animation combos. But it never quite achieves liftoff, which is a big problem for a musical – especially this musical.
Some of the numbers are dazzling, some are exhausting, and many are a mix of both—and still, somehow they work.
