When the white girl at the college asks Malcolm X what she can do to help his people, he responds with a blunt "Nothing." Though Malcolm X would later come around on this idea, the context of that girl's question stands out. She precedes it by asserting that she's not a bad…
Sally Jane BlackNov 21, 2022Fun fact I only just discovered today: the script of this masterpiece was actually written by none other than James Baldwin in the 1970's (his family estate requested his name be removed from the credits as Spike Lee was doing script revisions, though Lee maintains not much…

Imagine the Academy voters seeing Denzel in this and being like, "Yeah, but Pacino was so funny, 'hoo-ah!', lol."
lairdSep 1, 2020It is almost impossible to make a good biopic for the simple reason that a human life — any human life — is too complicated for the form. You can’t actually fit the full scope of someone’s life in a 120 minute movie. It’s why the best films in the genre center on a singular…

The pilgrimage to Mecca may be the best sequence in all of Spike Lee’s work. There’s an infinite number of terrible versions of Malcolm X that might have been made. It’s a miracle this is the one we got.
carrieandtracyFeb 5, 2018the two shots of the fires burning down homes two hours apart, about men holding their families as their houses blaze behind them, looking off in the distance of the racists that did it with fury, and knowing that this is the sign of their painfully inevitable demise. by…
Logan KennyMar 10, 2025Monumental and unfathomable, even moreso with the knowledge of its production. Decided to finally jump into this one after starting the Malcolm X episode of What Went Wrong and I’m glad I did. Unbelievable performance by Denzel, cannot believe the same person at the same…

This is what happens when Spike Lee and Denzel Washington work together: you get one of the BEST cinematic films in Hollywood. I saw X through and through; I forgot I was even watching Denzel act. 10/10 ✊🏾
a good story to show how greed and jealousy can ruin even the best ones you have never thought of

Despite obviously having heard of Malcom X, I had genuinely no clue of his life, his views (and how they changed). So watching this, beyond being a very good film, was also extremely educative of which I’m grateful for it most. The narrative structure was really solid, it’s a very long film in…

a powerful, well-made biopic and tribute to legendary civil rights icon malcom x that could only have been rightfully made by spike lee. denzel washington is revelatory in his character growth; excellent writing and performances throughout, a must-watch
it feels almost wrong to review this because it’s such a complete retelling of his life. i will say the movie is a long journey, but worth it to understand one of the most misunderstood figures in american history. very beautifully directed too!
