Synopsis

Melissa McCarthy is totally the life of the party. And also, in addition to that, she’s starring in Life of the Party! McCarthy plays Deanna, a middle-aged housewife reinventing herself after her husband suddenly asks for a divorce. Realizing that she regrets never having gotten her college degree, she decides to enroll… at her daughter’s university. Immersing herself in the full campus experience proves to be perfect cure for what ails Deanna, even if her daughter has a few reservations about the whole thing. They say you’re only young once, but apparently doing a walk of shame out of a frat house is ageless. Life of the Party is directed by Ben Falcone, McCarthy’s husband – and the pair co-wrote the script together. The film also stars Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Matt Walsh and Gillian Jacobs.

Life of the Party is proof that even the funniest actors need good material, which makes it all the more disappointing that McCarthy wrote the script with director Ben Falcone, who is also her husband.

Novelty and Melissa McCarthy’s comedic chops only carry Life of the Party to midterms, and it soon becomes apparent that it’s a star vehicle without any engine.

A charming and generally painless way to spend two hours. It’s not nearly as sharp as some of the best stuff she’s done, but it’s pointedly kinder too, wrapping even its nastiest characters.
