That’s how you end a movie right there

daniel goldhaberMay 20, 2025The first time that dissident Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was imprisoned for his supposed crimes against the regime, he spent most of his time in solitary confinement, blindfolded whenever he was taken out to be interrogated. Deprived of the use of his eyes, Panahi…

admittedly took a while to grasp this but those last twenty minutes floored me, a slow descent from dark comedy into pure dread, jafar panahi went crazy with this one

Like many Panahi films, deceptively light, often comedic, but with real anger lurking simmering that releases slowly and organically. Should we direct our rage at systems or individuals? What catharsis do we find in revenge? The maturity and empathy he brings to them is…
The Oscar ExpertNov 8, 2025This definitely deserves to get 2 or 3 acting nominations at the Oscars. It won't though 🙄

Really incredible storytelling. Very tense throughout and also a rather beautiful look at the effects of trauma and what healing looks like for different people. I really appreciated the ways we see each character work through things while they try to maintain their humanity as well. The…
Another contender for Best Picture that I support. Really well acted and written movie about abuse trauma. Has one of the most terrifying endings in any movie that gave me severe goosebumps. It will probably win nothing at the Oscars, but it has my pick for quite a few categories

fabulous dialogues writing as well as acting. i love how jafar managed to add an undertone of dark comedy to a movie which is supposed to be about a really serious political issue. the ending is great! the film will hit harder if you know the backstory of the director 7.5/10
Wow, I didn’t expect to see this film explore revenge, trauma response, justice, and healing so thoroughly. This story can’t go unnoticed in today’s political climate with its portrayal of ethical dilemmas. One of my favorites of the year. 9

Painful, humane, anxious, revolting and somewhat hopeful. What if in one day of confronting the past you could heal more than a human could aspire to but still remain broken?
Has one of my favorite endings of the year and the fact that Jafar Panahi could be imprisoned for this in Iran yet made it illegally anyways ... what a powerful voice
