Elaine May knows that comedy is when one guy is short and one is tall and they are both dumb as hell! yet, much like another almost-as-talented Jewish prophet, they crucified her for telling the truth (can be dangerous business)

To paraphrase a comment I saw on a MUBI post about this film, BURN AFTER READING for the Reagan era.
Jake ColeNov 26, 2022Elaine May will forever be GOATed for spending over 50 million dollars of major studio money -- for context, that's the budget of the same year's The Untouchables and Beverly Hills Cop II *combined* -- on a buddy comedy where Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman sing a song…

5/10 #1 on Sparks top 10 movies. It’s obvious Sparks-style humor, and I’m sure this was partly chosen because they probably felt a similar way performing in front of their first audiences until Todd Rundgren stepped in. “It’s not smuck it’s schmuck” is probably my favorite line.

A truly dreadful film, a lifeless, massive, lumbering exercise in failed comedy. Elaine May, the director, has mounted a multimillion-dollar expedition in search of a plot so thin that it hardly could support a five-minute TV sketch.
