Synopsis

Donnie Yen reprises his role as the legendary Wing Chun master in the grand finale of the revolutionary martial arts series. Following the death of his wife, Ip Man travels to San Francisco to ease tensions between the local kung fu masters and his star student, Bruce Lee, while searching for a better future for his son. Goofs

  • Racism against Chinese (and East Asians in general) is a significant topic in this film, particularly with the U.S. Marines having to recognize Wu Shu as a potential combat style. When Colin Frater arrives at the Mid-Autumn Festival, he announces that he is going to demonstrate his karate skills to the "yellow bitches." Yet, Colin Frater and the other Marines seem to have forgotten that karate originated from Japan.

Donnie Yen is awesome. The movie definitely has an agenda though. I'm part Chinese and have witnessed all ethnicities' bigotry, prejudice, ignorance and stereotyping. I feel this Up Man lacked the humility of previous iterations.

Ip Man 4: The Finale is a thrilling end to the Ip Man saga. The action is fast-paced, and the fighting is poetic. The story not only brings a modern twist to the legend but is just as relevant today as it was in the 70s.
