Atom User Reviews for Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1
It’s not a bad movie but it’s a really unfocused movie with a lot of subplots and characters. Hard to keep track. This might have been better if it released and edited as a mini-series.
A great set up to an interesting saga. Lots of storylines that will come together over the course of the next three films. Can’t wait for the second installment in August!
Can’t wait to see the next Chapter
Good old-fashioned (90s-style) entertainment. Just sit back and soak in the time, place, and people.
Really a good American story!
Great movie!
3 hours of incoherenceis with so many stirylines are little long and boring. Unfortunately this movie seems like it was made by people who have no understanding of how to write and edit a consistent story. The one positive note I can give is that the cinematography and scenery were so beautiful and the actors turn in good performances but I just wish there could have been an actual story to complement all that.
Should have waited for it to be streaming. 3 hrs long needed too many bathroom breaks no pause button.
Felt like a waste of time. So boring, so slow.
Slow and boring. Story seemed to lack focus. Characters were not interesting. I love Kevin Kostner but this movie ranks as one of the worst I have ever paid to see. I’m not planning on watching the next movie.
I was expecting some good entertainment, it was awful, no connection, it kept jumping from part to part. Don’t bother making a sequel
Such a great movie, if you’re a Yellowstone fan you must see this movie. The casting, story line, setting is incredible and a must see. I can’t wait for the next saga 2 coming out on Aug 16. My husband loves Yellowstone and Kevin Costner. Y’all need to see it!
Gorgeous film, one of the two best Westerns of the 21st century
Keep me going the whole time!!! Loved it will see it again
Beautiful story with plenty of action, drama, and history. Kevin Costner is pure genius 👏
Absolutely no character development, a sprinkling of a storyline, where the only thing I could come up with, is that every group is tied together with the goal to make it to a lush, green countryside in a place called Horizon…
Too many sub plots in the movie, there were so many opportunities to develop a strong story line but the movie kept switching to another territory, I was really disappointed.
Should have been a tv movie.
We rate movies on 1-4 scale. But Sometimes a movie is so epic in its meandering, so tepid in its vision, and so lackluster in its delivery that something else is needed to convey the absolute wheels coming off the wagons that Horizon is. This movie is so bad that I cant even give it zero stars because that would entertain the notion it is even a movie. This is not a movie. It is worse than the blue fuzz you get with no reception. Worse than nails on a chalkboard. Worse than pulling a hang nail. I put this in the top 5 worst movies of all time with all of the other 4 as Pauli shores career. Avoid at all costs. This movie aged me 100 years like the man who has chosen poorly in Indiana jones and the last crusade. Sorry Costner. You have big balls to make this movie but it dint work out.
Not a “must see” at all. Beautiful cinematography, for sure, but it is slow, no original plot, a kind of “what’s the point?” kind of movie.
Too much going on. Terrible acting. No story line. Disappointed
Beautiful scenery and filmmaking, multiple stories weaved together, looking forward to part 2 next month, nothing surprising
So here’s the thing… I didn’t realize going into it how long this movie is. That aside, beautifully shot great cast! Deff slow because it’s laying the groundwork for part 2 coming out in August if what I heard is correct there’s gonna be 2 more after so idk liked it but couldn’t tell you a single scene that was like super interesting
Horizon is a good story, it's just slow and somewhat predictable. It could have been told in two hours instead of three.
It was so boring and so many stories happening I didn’t have time to even get into the characters. Such a long movie for nothing to happen so disappointing.
This movie jumped around, had no true plot. It was horrible.
Surprised how much we all liked it
I really wanted to like this film but it felt like you were thrown into a familiar storyline where a number of the characters weren’t developed enough to be truly vested in any of them. At one point the film felt like I was binge watching a Western miniseries for 3 hours. An epic Western like Tombstone should have been the blueprint for this movie.
Story line was fine, but too many individual stories were disjointed and confusing. LOVED THE SCENERY!
boring
What an incredible chapter 1.
To many story lines, very disappointed. Couldn’t keep up with the unfinished sagas
About what I expected for the 1st of a 4 part series.
Great!! I can’t wait for part 2
I went mainly to support Kevin Costner. Not a big western fan but maybe I could be converted. I lost the theme almost immediately and that continued until the end. They gave a few snippets at the end about what the next chapter(s) will be like. I think I'll give Horizon another shot.
Choppy story line, hard to see how it will go other than slow and the last 5 minutes of vignettes was wasteful
Looking forward to the next episodes
Slow and long for no reason. Better off watching when it comes to a streaming platform.
This is the future of film. Kevin Costner has set the gold standard for not only new Western stories but the way we watch movies moving forward. I am excited to see part two in August!
Great western that slows down quite a bit in the third act. Definitely better suited for a mini series due to this being the first of four films in the saga, but still a fantastic movie going experience.
It may be 3 hours long but flies by.
too much unnecessary dialogue. hopefully the next three parts will bring it together
action all the way, didn't seem like a 3 hour movie!
Started out slow but the next series should be good!!
Hard to follow. The story. Jumping around too much.
Good but slow moving expected more action
the movie suffers from too much going on. Everything thing is entertaining for the most part, but it jumps around alot and when it does it does it fi too long. otherwise a beautifully crafted film.
should've been good but disappointing. why the side drama with saloon girl?
It wanders aimlessly and you’ll stick around to see if it gets tied together by the end, but it never does. It just ends strangely while trying to set itself up to be an epic series, and it fails at that.
Can’t wait for the remaining parts
Metacritic
Well-acted as far as superficial characterizations allow (Costner and Jon Baird share screenplay credit) and impressively mounted for a wide-open-spaces pageant that, quizzically, was not shot in widescreen, “Horizon” is most successful at filling its frames with ambition.

The first chapter in Kevin Costner's epic western series is a meandering, regressive snooze.

Costner is fully in traditionalist mode here, painting a quote-unquote sweeping American saga that feels like an expensive miniseries compressed into feature form.
