Jaw-dropping animation. How I’ve never heard of this is beyond me. I watched most of this in awe at not just the skill on display, but the painstaking dedication to this arduous art style. An overlooked gem.
ChrisStuckmannJun 15, 2025"Lord, save my soul"I'm not about to shout from the rooftops that I've just watched some underseen masterpiece. But, for a 1984 Hungarian animated film, told completely in oil paintings come to life, this is a damn good watch all things considered. Certainly an interesting…
MrPPeepsMay 11, 2026An incremental, jagged odyssey into oil paint inferno; haunting figures with evocative distorted expressions snapping into reality without warning from their static frames to explode into vivid colour as they journey and brawl for their glorious honour. Truly dreamlike in…

Tremendously brutal and hauntingly brilliant. The story of a man coming to terms with his place in this filthy twisted world of paintings and orchestral music. Where has this been my whole life?

olivia ✨Apr 23, 2026HEROIC TIMES (Daliás idők, 1984) is a triumph. Typically, when one thinks of a traditional 2D cel animated film, the works of Walt Disney spring to mind, along with a few other notable animation studio features in the 1980s. Often seen as a kids medium, animated films have…

This film is worth watching just for the style. At its best it is gorgeous and energetic. But the style as well as the story I think struggles with consistency, where both are very potent at their best and very jarring at their worst. not perfect but a unique film experience
Artwork was very cool, 10 people to make 40,000 oil paintings for this movie. All the dialogue is in Hungarian and the plot was a little hard to follow.
