6 donkeys played EO in this. I’m really good at recognizing different donkeys so that really took me out of it

One of those children’s Odyssey movies about a domestic animal escaping into the wild for the first time/trying to return to their owner, only instead of being family-friendly it was a haunting, abstract Euroart light show of exploitation and abuse. Has all the shallow…

A visually stunning, anxiety-inducing odyssey with phenomenal sound design and a haunting score. Constantly surprised me, though its white liberal prioritization of animal suffering over migrant dignity left a sour taste. Sentimental manipulation of the first degree that works.

Un âne qui malheureusement voit sa vie écrite par les choix des hommes qu’il rencontre. Un regard poétique touchant sur le monde, l’humanité et la cause animale. Profondément touchant ❤️‍🩹

This is a profoundly serious film, one concerned about our disregard for animals and our disintegrating ecosystems, but it is also restlessly alive.

What draws us in is the inventive and luminous cinematography from Michal Dymek (with additional footage by Pawel Edelman and Michal Englert), using drone shots, fish-eye lenses and red and blue filters. Accompanied by an unsettling electronic score, the donkey-in-a-disco effect is trippy, a hallucinogenic projection of what it might be like to live in an animal’s consciousness, including its dreams and flashbacks.
