something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Andrew Scott is great, possibly, as actor Ian Charleson performing Hamlet as he dies of AIDS, but it's hard to tell in a movie so cut to ribbons. plays like an 100-minute trailer for itself, leaving nothing but half-empty tropes…

I dug this for the first hour. Andrew Scott is excellent throughout and I there are some great moments with the supporting case as well. But the film really went downhill as it became increasingly obvious and bludgeoning. I was especially recoiling at the relentless use of…

ELSINORE is a perfectly fine film elevated by extraordinary work from Andrew Scott, who plays Ian Charleson as he delivers the performance of a lifetime as Hamlet on stage while privately battling AIDS. The heartbreak, agony, drive, joy, and sheer courage of Charleson’s…

Verges on Malickian with its many montages, but so what! A robust, earnest, thoughtful tribute to artists snatched from the world too soon and a  celebration of the communities that loved them and welcomed them to the end. This is not the shameless Oscar bait some are…

Andrew Scott gives a powerhouse dramatic performance in Elsinore, in which he plays a real-life actor dying of AIDS as he embarks on playing his dream role of Hamlet. Overly chaotic editing and score choices hurt this film overall, but what a tremendous acting showcase for…

The pallid grayness of Mike Eley’s cinematography is probably supposed to mimic the finality of HIV/AIDS taking hold, but there’s no passion aesthetically to counterbalance what becomes absolute misery onscreen to watch.

Does Elsinore get melodramatic along the way? Sure, but only in the sense that Shakespeare gets melodramatic – which is to say, gloriously so.

Scott’s searing dual performance — as Charleson and as Hamlet in a National Theatre production that became both the ultimate challenge and fulfillment of his professional career — makes Simon Stone’s film an emotional powerhouse even if it doesn’t avoid inspirational cliché. But it’s a vivid picture of London at the height of the AIDS crisis and a stirring gesture of gratitude to art, specifically theater, as a lifeline even when death looms large.
