Synopsis
Eighth grade is the worst – but luckily the same doesn’t hold true for Eighth Grade, the debut feature from writer/director Bo Burnham. The film follows an awkward, quiet thirteen-year-old named Kayla (Elsie Fisher) as she navigates her last week of middle school. Her eighth grade year was a disaster, and even though she isn’t the person she wants to be yet (despite what her inspirational YouTube testimonials may indicate), change is on the horizon: in the form of high school.

The car scene broke me into a trillion pieces. It tore me down, ripped me of my skin and then let me bleed. But after the movie was over, it bandaged me and I could breathe. I've been where she was. The youngest one in the room, left alone with some guy way older and way…

SarahAug 13, 2018“stay cool, and i can’t wait to be you” i’ve said it for years: loneliness is underrated. showing it on screen is really tricky territory, it’s either too dull or too dark. and in almost every coming of age film, the protagonist has a best friend, or even a big group of…

Once in a while there’s a movie that is so brazen and real and self-reflexive about the way it portrays a topic that, if it’s successful enough, any movie made thereafter about the same topic has a responsibility to meet it’s baseline. Like, The Dark Knight forced superhero…
demi adejuyigbeFeb 3, 2019Rather nervously sat down to watch this with our two teen daughters. I thought it might be traumatizing, too close to home, especially for our oldest, who has severe social anxiety and depression. But we stayed up til 2 AM afterwards talking. There were tears and hugs. They…

9/10 As someone who just exited childhood, this movie was too real. So much so that it made me feel a visceral level of cringe. It made those heart warming or sad scenes, hit even harder too. Most “coming of age” movies are out of touch, but this one actually felt like being 13
This movie was uncomfortable, honest, and the thing I loved most about it was the universality it had. It gave a glimpse inside the digital generation and it was such a rare movie that I think speaks to any age. Bo Burnham did an amazing job writing this story.

Did an excellent job reconnecting me with my middle-schooler self. Had me welling up with the themes of growing up, losing our innocence, struggling with insecurities and self worth, and navigating the world while discovering your identity. Captured the cringe of 13 very well.

It left me feeling so uncomfortable, the main character plays an extremely nervous introverted girl and you just want to put her on meds or something! There was absolutely nothing of interest for the viewer! Super monotonous! This is the kinda thing you don’t spend $15 in a…
LLleesa leesaLovely movie. Great job of highlighting the way children actually think an act. I saw myself in the character a lot. You never really see a coming of age story about a girl, and Bo Burnham really hit it out if the park with this one. They could have explored her…
